Savage & Bloody

This book is an excellent companion to "Queen Victoria's Little Wars". There is some time overlap, and a bit of repetition in the wars, but mostly this book (a compilation of three works by the same author) covers the really unknown battles and wars. Some of them were very brief, some took many years, but all of them were savage and bloody. The British looked for almost any excuse to impose their hegemony on a distant country inhabited by what they considered inferior peoples. Some of their opponents, however, were fairly adept at fighting, and it cost the Empire dearly in men and money to subdue them. My one quibble with this excellent book is the total lack of maps, which really would have helped in areas that are completely unfamiliar to the average reader.

Some Disappointments With What is Otherwise an Excellent Book

Sadly I have a number of issues with what otherwise would be an excellent book. First, no maps. Not a one. Really missed when you try to follow some of the narratives.

Second, I have come across a number of errors, like the wrong year being mentioned, or using "limbered" when "unlimbered" is what the author obviously meant. And at one point the author mentions Garnet Wolseley as the victor of the 1879 Zulu War and the 1881 Boer War. From my own reading (not claiming to be an expert or anything) I believe that Wolseley arrived too late to have any affect on the Zulu War and didn't take part in any actions of the First Boer War, which certainly couldn't be claimed as a British victory anyway. These are the errors I'm aware of, who knows what other facts presented are in error? Really not a big deal, but certainly something to be aware of.

Finally, and this may be the most unforgivable of all, the book is printed so that the text runs very close to the inner edge of each page, requiring the reader to force open the book in order to read all the text. This is especially bad near the ends of the book. Indeed on some pages the white space between the end of a line and and the edge of the page is probably only a millimeter or two. This makes it uncomfortable to read for those of us who have arthritis issues.

It's a shame, really, all these issues, since the book otherwise is an excellent collection of overviews of many of the more obscure British (and one American, oddly) campaigns of the 19th century.

A quick overview of obscure campaigns

This book contains digests of now forgotten wars waged by the British Empire. You will find a history of the Hut Tax War, the campaign in British Honduras, the Sikh wars and the Eureka Stockade in Australia. Well written and concise.

1 Caveat. The Modoc War described herein was NOT waged by the British Empire. It was an American war, in the United States and waged by Americans.

The best historic resource

This book is an excellent resource for the history of toilets. All sources are sited and the text is rich in historical facts. It also has colored graphics.

During the course of the 17th century, England and the Netherlands three times found themselves at war in the North Sea. The first war, between 1652 and 1654, came about as a result of a mixture of causes: the rejection by the Dutch state of the English government's fledgling ideas of political union, the collusion of the Dutch Orangists with the exiled English royal family and the huge growth of English naval power during the Commonwealth; but perhaps, chiefly the competition over trade, not only in the North Sea, but across the whole world. The second and third Anglo-Dutch naval wars (1665-7 and 1672-4), in Charles II's reign, took place in greatly modified political circumstances. Charles's relationship with Catholic France was a powerful catalyst, but the ostensible aim continued to be commercial domination of the sea. In this study of the wars the authors take the reader through the background, causes and courses of the wars, illuminating all the battles and political going-ons that lay behind them. The tactics of battle and the famous naval heroics of such men as Robert Blake, Cornelis Tromp and Michiel de Ruyter are all explored in detail.

About the Author
Roger Hainsworth is Associate Professor in History at the University of Adelaide. His publications include The Swordsmen in Power: War and Politics under the English Republic 1649-1660 (Sutton Publishing, 1997) and Stewards, Lords and People: the Estate Steward and his World in Later Stuart England.

Christine Churches tutors and lectures within the history department at the University of Adelaide and has had a number of articles published on aspects of social and legal history.

A good military history

This book is primarily a military history. The naval battles are described in some detail, drawing on first-hand accounts. A map is provided for most of the battles. Black-and-white reproductions of battle paintings and ship sketches by Dutch artists are provided. Nautical terms are used without definition. If you want to follow the battle descriptions in detail, you might want to grab a supplementary reference.
The underlying political events in England and Netherlands during 1652-1674 are also described. You get some fascinating glimpses into the workings of the Dutch republic during its brief heyday and into English politics during this very turbulent period.
The 2nd chapter and the brief epilogue are devoted to causes and results of the wars, respectively. Still, I agree with a previous reviewer that more context could have been provided. By limiting the detailed account to 1652-1674, we are left with unanswered questions, particularly biographical. Some heroic figures emerge from the account, particularly the Dutch admiral De Ruyter and politician Jan de Witt, and a brief biographical sketch would have been nice. However, b&w reproductions of paintings of the prominent figures, including De Ruyter and De Witt, are provided.
The writing style is occasionally eloquent, but also surprisingly awkward at times. The meaning is always clear, however.
In short, I enjoyed reading this book and learned a lot from it. There doesn't seem to be much alternative in print on this interesting subject.

The Bare Facts - and little else!

The three naval campaigns fought between England and the Dutch Republic in the mid-seventeenth century were significant both politically and technically. Logic and self-interest should have dictated that the two great Protestant powers of the time never went to war with each other, but it took three bruising conflicts before they realised that their interests must be aligned in the face of the rising menace of Louis XIV's France. These wars were characterised by almost continuous series of large-scale battles involving huge numbers of ships. Hard experience exposed the weakness of the "melee" tactics predominating initially and led to experiments in the line-of-battle tactics and signalling systems which would be the foundation for the great age of fighting sail in the next century and a half. This book sketches the backgrounds to the three wars and gives competent descriptions of the main actions, thereby filling a need for an easily accessible book on this important period. The text's main weakness is however its brevity, which precludes any significant contextual information on the fleets or the principal commanders, most of whom we encounter as already mature and seasoned admirals. Little information is provided on the way in which the fleets came into being initially (how, after a decade of Civil War, did the English Commonwealth come to have such a large and efficient fleet?) or how they were employed immediately before, or between, the individual wars - the exploits of the Dutch Navy being particularly interesting in this respect. The story is full of colourful personalities - Blake, Tromp, de Ruyter, Evertsen, Monck, Sandwich, Prince Rupert, the de Witt Brothers and the future James II, but we learn nothing of their backgrounds or development prior to the events described. The book is well illustrated, and many of the pictures by the v/d Veldens, father and son, essentially official war artists to the Dutch Navy, make one long for more information on this fascinating duo and their working methods. A second edition of the book would benefit from the addition of "boxes" in the text with information on these main players, as well as on the navies themselves. The overall verdict is that this book is a missed opportunity - and an expensive one to boot, for its length - but it nevertheless does fill an empty niche. Those who buy it will also enjoy Sir Arthur Bryant's brilliant trilogy on Pepys, who played such a significant role in the latter two conflicts and who's eyewitness testimony is so invaluable.

Enjoyable & Interesting Account of the English & Dutch Wars

This book, `The Anglo-Dutch Naval Wars, 1652-1674' by Roger Hainsworth and Christine Churches is a very enjoyable account of the naval wars fought between England and the Netherlands. The many battles fought took place from the period of Cromwell's Commonwealth through to the reign of Charles II. The book is broken up into two main sections; `The First Dutch War' and then `The Later Wars'.
The narrative flows smoothly and the story is well told, we come across many of the names we have all heard at school. Captains like Robert Blake, Prince Rupert, Cornelis Tromp and Michiel de Ruyter, plus many more naval commanders, some famous some infamous. The sections covering the fighting are well told and a number of first-hand accounts are used throughout the narrative to give you a better feeling of the terrors of naval fighting at that time.
The book is well researched and presented and I enjoyed the story a great deal. I have only read bits and pieces about these conflicts in other books covering this period; this is the first book that I have come across that has covered these naval wars in such detail.
Overall I think most people would enjoy the story as much as I did. The book is 212 pages in length and is full of lovely plates and paintings taken from the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich in London (sadly all in black and white). A number of maps are also supplied in the book but are of a basic nature.

'This is a fresh look at the series of raids by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines in 1918 to sink block ships at Zeebrugge and Ostend, long viewed as a gallant failure. Coleman, author of several works on British naval history, covers every aspect of the raids, from the origins of the idea through the planning, including some clever cover stories, organization, and training, for the mission, which ultimately involved some 10,000 men and more than 75 vessels of various sorts, and even some aircraft. We also get a look at a number of interesting people, most notably Roger Keyes, but also some officers who would attain considerable fame in a later war, including Dudley Pound and Andrew Cunningham. The accounts of the actual operations are detailed, graphic, and often grim. Coleman tells all this well, but what sets his work apart is his proof that, contrary to German claims, the mission successfully prevented submarines from reaching the sea. Drawing upon a variety of evidence, including photographic analysis, testimony of local citizens, and records of the comings and goings of U-boats, Coleman refutes claims of the mission’s failure oddly echoed by some in Britain due to interservice and personal rivalries, or even political expedience. Despite a lack of notes, Coleman makes a convincing case, and this book will be rewarding reading for those interested in the naval side of the Great War, the Royal Navy, or special operations.'

A good account of the 1936 Olympic Games

The Berlin Olympics of 1936 was perhaps the first games in which politics played a significant role. For this reason, it is considered to be one of the most controversial Olympic Games of modern times. But it was not just the politics of the Third Reich that cast it's shadow over the Games - other politicial considerations, particularly with regard to racial tensions, both Jewish and Black, made its mark. Surprisingly, the Jewish question was brought to bear on not only the selection of the German team, but also the American, in what must surely be a surprise to most readers. The long running dispute between "amateur" and "professional" athletes also raises its head. Hilton delves into each of these issues and how they came to bear upon the Games. The organization of the Games is also discussed, including Hitler's dominance of the process.

Of course, the Games is not just backroom politics. After all, it is the world's largest sporting event, and the sporting participants and their endeavors come under scrutiny. The star of the Games was undoubtedly Jesse Owens. But Hilton has also thrown the spotlight on other athletic notables, including the lesser lights of the American track and field team, along with Hendrika Mastenbroek, whose efforts in the pool were largely overlooked, despite winning 3 golds. There is passing comment on the gender controversy between Helen Stephens and Stella Walsh, two track athletes competing for Britain and Poland respectively. It is not just the athlete's sporting endeavors that is discussed by Hilton, but also what became of many of them afterwards.

A previous reviewer has commented on the style of the author's writing: "And that was the seventh day." I too found this tedious. Christopher Hilton has almost informal style at times to his writing. While it works for his racing car driver biographies (his books "Ayrton Senna: The Hard Edge of Genuis" and "Alain Prost" are superb) it does not come off so well here. It should have been toned down in my opinion. Nonetheless, this is really a minor bugbear. "Hitler's Olympics" is a good account of the 1936 Berlin Games and is well worth a look for an insight into the personalities, politics and competitive endeavors of one of the most controversial Olympic Games ever. At the conclusion of the book, there is a statistics section, which lists the medal winners of the Games, along with comparisons (where possible) to the 2004 Athens Games. "Hitler's Olympics" also includes an insert of black and white photography.

Good book about the controversial 1936 Olympics

Christopher Hilton has done his background on the 1936 Berlin Olympics. What a controversial and fascinating Olympics it was. The author tells of the background of varioius athletes and how the games effected each one of them. These were the Olympics that Adolf Hitler used to highlight the "superiority" of the German athletes. It backfired on him especially when it came to American Jesse Owens. Hilton describes the beginnings of the German Olympic delegations quest to bring the Olympic Games to Berlin and the behind-the-scenes maneuvering that gave them the games. The athletes from all over the world were the pawns in these Olympics. The Jewish athletes is especially the tragic ones in this book. This is a great book that is highly recommended to those interested in the Olympic Games, Nazi Germany, and just a good story in general.

Comprehensive but a bit difficult to understand sometimes

I dabble in electronics as a hobby so a lot of times I will come across something with which I am unfamiliar. In those instances, a good reference is indispensable. I browsed this dictionary in a store once, and the entries I happened to look up were concise and thorough. However, it didn't seem worth the hundred dollars they were asking in the store (especially since the latest edition is over ten years old) so I picked it up on Amazon for about half that. After using it for a while I have discovered that some of the entries use language that is a bit technical for the hobbyist, but I can usually figure out what it is conveying if I think about it for a while, and perhaps cross-reference the material with another source like the Illustrated Encyclopedic Dictionary of Electronics by John Douglas-Young (which is written very clearly, but is much less comprehensive, with fewer entries, and is over twenty years old). I would actually give this book three and half stars. It's pretty good but not great.

This dictionary is compete, larg and concice. It covers all aspects of electronics and is quite humbling. No one person can know it all.

Entrepreneurs, especially first-timers, are often frustrated with the start-up process. Excellent read for the entrepreneur

Many entrepreneur books focus on stories of companies that grew out of the need for an "unseen" market. The typical entrepreneurial story consists of individuals who recongized a need unfulfilled and started a business based on servicing that need. "The Rhythm of Business" introduces an alternative concept - that starting a business in an already pioneered market is also good thing. "The Rhythm of Business" is based on the principle that customer interaction is the most critical part of running a company.
The author uses the analogy of comparing business decisions to a dance. Most companies that startup usually have to modify their original "vision" in order to become successful. That is the rhythm of business - adjusting your business to meet the real demands of the customer. Mr. Shuman stresses that when starting up a company, before going into full scale business the entrepreneur must first do a series of "customer interaction cycles" to get a feel for what the customer really wants.
The book follows several examples of startup companies including an entrepreneur named Tim DeMello, founder of a company named Streamline. The book shows that when Tim started Streamline, a home delivery service, he conducted a series of test cycles to determine what kind of products people prefered and how they wanted the products delivered. Through observation, he determined that the best way of delivering his goods to the customer would be via a storage bin outside the customer's home that his company would automatically replenish on a certain schedule. It was convenient for the customer because there was no concern over delivery times or even a need to constantly reorder. This concept evolved through several stages of pretend situations, where Tim used himself as a customer.
In addition, this book filled many of the "gaps" of information I had about starting up a company. It provided a non-techincal, easy to understand explanation of how you would obtain capital, divide ownership, and hire for your startup company. Reading this explanation clarified for me many of the steps obscured by jargon in business law books.
This book is great for any entrepreneur or company manager. It teaches practical concepts and makes you more aware of how to satisfy your customers. I recommend this book to anyone managing or wanting to start up a company. It will save you time, money, and perhaps the success of your business.

Very useful book for entrepreneurs

To be successful in your business you should have to have rhythm. The rhythm of business is attempting to develop a product or service that fulfills a group of customers¡¦ wants and needs, testing the product or service in the marketplace, refining the product and service to more accurately fulfill the customers¡¦ wants and needs. Successful businessmen are both born and made. But, there is a difference between two types just as there is a difference between someone we would describe as having ¡§natural, inborn¡¨ athletic and someone who practice a lot and plays hard.
Developing the rhythm of business
Six basic requirements to developing the rhythm of business:
1. You need some natural skills
2. You need to work hard and practice
3. You need a basic understanding of the mechanics of the business you are in
4. You need to gather information about your business
5. You need to constantly think about your business
6. You need to love your business with a passion

New idea: The key component of the rhythm of business is failure.
When you develop a product, you should allow for ¡§failure¡¨ in your business plan. When you suffer from ¡§failure¡¨, you can find out the wrong aspect, you should have an improvement on the product and make a correct decision that continue to develop a product, bring it to market, listen to the customers¡¦ wants and needs and refine the product until it become success.
Easy to understand
The author explains the nature of rhythm and the requirement of rhythm of business by using real life examples and successful stories in the real world. For examples, the successful story of Bill Gate and the concept he applied we can find it is the same in the book: developing, testing, refining a product or service until it was right.
Practical
The theory is very useful for the entrepreneurs who want to start their business and it motivates them to start their business and try and improve. For example, you should have interest in the industry which you want to start your business, it is because if you don¡¦t have interest in that industry, you won¡¦t love it, you won¡¦t have passion to do what you are doing. You will not upset by doing business and can¡¦t invest all your time and concentration to the business, finally, the result is you will suffer from the losses including money and time from your own business.

Expertise and Process in Harmony

With Rottenberg, Shuman has written a book which supports this basic assertion: that each business has a rhythm: "how all businesses develop and it is the beat to which all business flows." What does this mean? At first, I did not understand and suspected gobbledygook so I re-read the Introduction and then I got it: each business has a way of taking on a life and pace of its own, more often than not different from what its founder(s) originally had in mind. This "life" is shaped by several different influences, many of which could not have been anticipated. Changes in the competitive marketplace, for example, or new regulatory legislation or the loss of a key executive or ofa major account. As with humans, no two companies have the same "life." More to the point, children seldom develop into adolescence and then adulthood precisely the way their parents expected or at least hoped.
So, what to do? Good question. In the Introduction, Shuman provides three brief quotations of Peter Drucker, Leo Kahn, and Barry Diller. Collectively, their remarks suggest that decision-makers in any organization (regardless of nature or size) should lead and manage to the best of their ability, of course, but understrand -- and accept -- the fact that the process of business can be influenced and directed but not kept under total control. Imagine taking an 800-pound domesticated tiger out for a walk in the neighborhood. You have him on a leash. Who's taking whom for a walk? If I understand Shuman correctly, this analogy is apt.
He organizes his material within three Parts: The Rhythm of Business, Learning to Feel the Rhythm, and Let the Dance Begin. At the end of each of the ten chapters, he provides a list of Key Points. The repetition of key points throughout the book is somewhat irritating but probably achieves Shuman's objective. Those who have read the book can easily review the lists of Key Points later as well as Shuman's definition of "the rhythm of business" on page 5. With regard to what is needed, Shuman identifies these six requirements:
1. You need, at least, some natural skills.
2. You need to work hard and practice.
3. You need a basic understanding of the mechanics of the business you are in.
4. You need to gather informnation about your business.
6. You need to love your business with a passion.
Obviously, there is nothing original about these "requirements." What differentiates this book from most other books I have read on the same general subject (i.e. building an organization which sustains its success) is Shuman's concept of "rhythm." Recall the metaphor I presumed to share earlier. Like a tiger, an organization will not always "follow directions," "go where you want it to go," "submit itself totally to your will," etc. The challenge is to understand the beast, to trust its instincts, to nourish as well as manage its strength, and channel its energy while allowing it to fulfill its own destiny, whatever that proves to be. I know all this may sound corny but I really do not know how else to explain my "take" on Shuman's concept.
Shuman repeatedly stresses the importance of business being customer-driven and I agree. (I think business should also be employee- or associate-driven. If you don't take good care of your people, you will lose the best and the brightest, be left with the donkeys and hamsters, and your customers will by then have gone away.) The term "rhythm of business" should not be applied too narrowly. In fact, what Shuman is really talking about involves a multiple of entities (employees, customers, vendors, service providers, etc.) each of which has its own "rhythm." Moreover, the combination of these entities generates its own "rhythm." Imagine giving a bubble bath to ten 900-pound tigers at the same time. That is not exactly what George Gershwin had in mind when he composed "I Got Rhythm."
Also with Rottenberg's assistance, Shuman later co-authored two other books with Janice Twombley which develop this idea in much greater depth: Collaborative Communities and then more recently, Everyone Is a Customer. Those who share my high regard for this book are strongly urged to read the other two. Who could ask for anything more?
