Yet her origins were far from aristocratic. The illegitimate daughter of a Jewish woman from Prague and a Jewish moneylender, Stephanie always claimed to be of pure Aryan descent. A shameless social climber, she had a child by the Emperor¦s son-in-law and acquired her title by marriage to another Austro-Hungarian prince. Employed by Lord Rothermere, her most important assignment was to bring Rothermere and Adolf Hitler together. Hitler awarded her the Gold Medal of the Nazi Party, a unique honor for any woman, let alone one generally known to be Jewish. Divorced since 1920, Stephanie had conducted a string of affaires with rich and influential men. In 1937 she began an intense relationship with Fritz Wiedemann, Hitler's adjutant. When Hitler learned of this he dispatched Wiedemann to the post of Consul-General in San Francisco, where Stephanie joined him in 1939. In 1941, she managed to avoid being deported as a spy by seducing the head of the US immigration authority. After the war, Stephanie began a completely new career as a journalist for several publications including Axel Springer's Stern magazine, for whom she secured the Kennedy and Johnson interviews.

In all the books I have read about WWII and the Nazis, I don't recall ever reading anything about Stephanie Von Hohenlohe. But here she is, all mystery and enigma, meticulously well-documented by author Martha Schad. The story of Princess Von Hohenlohe's life is almost stranger than fiction. She was a Jewish woman (non-practicing) who wormed her way into Hitler's inner social circle and became his close friend and confidant despite warnings to Hitler by top National Socialists of her non-Aryan heritage. In fact, she was adept at worming her way into anything that could work to her advantage, starting with the aristocracy and ending by working with some of the most powerful newspapermen in America and in post-war Germany. She could also worm her way out of almost any predicament and went through lovers like someone with diarrhea goes through toilet paper. A friend loaned me this book with hearty recommendations, but after reading the summary inside the dustcover, I almost took a pass. But as I told him I would read it, I finally did. What I discovered in the Princess was a scheming semen-sponge who had chutzpah by the ton. It took nerve enough for her as a Jewish woman to hang out with Hitler and assorted National Socialists, it took nerves of steel to be all things to all people while oblivious to any real danger to herself. I wouldn't say she was a spy, I'd say she was a brazen social climber whose loyalties were situational. And she continued that right up to her death. Witness how she began her time in America! History is studied in our schools focusing on the big picture and on events which prove to be turning points. But it is driven by millions of almost faceless individuals, some of whom make unheralded contributions that just might have changed how events eventually work out. Though the revelations in this book will likely not cause a revision of our understanding of the Third Reich, it is filled with fascinating but often petty details. Enigma no more

Unlike some previous posters, I have heard about Princess von Hohenlohe before, as one of Hitler's favorite women, together with Winifred Wagner and Marie Vassiltchikov. I wouldn't call her an enigma, but rather a very opportunistic woman who was always looking for way ahead. She was definitely a chameleon and was very adaptable to change. It is truly amazing how she was able to seduce and charm much younger men while already in her 60-70s.

I have truly enjoyed reading this book. It is a very detailed study of her life, her relationships with the rich and powerful, and overall, her survival. I do consider her a survivor even if I disagree with her loyalties.

I would, however, like to know more about her early life, especially how exactly a girl from a Jewish family was able to get into high aristocratic circles. Who faciliated her meeting with Franz Salvator, what was the reaction of the Hapsburg family (after all, he was the husband of Princess Marie Valerie, the emperor's favorite daughter) and her son's relationship with the Hapsburgs.

I hope to see more similar works from the author. This is a very fascinating subject.

Stranger Than Fiction

A great first hand account of the American Revolution

This is an outstanding account of the American Revolution by an overlooked point of view, being that of a British Officer. John Peebles, an officer in the famed Royal Highland Regiment was unfortunately one of the few soldiers of the British to keep an everyday diary of his life during the American Revolution. His diary begins in Europe when his regiment is mustering up soldiers to fight overseas in America. It is fascinating to see how the British Army was preparing for war against "the colonists". Peeble's also keeps a quick summary of the things that happened everyday during his tour of duty, from the mondane of standing watch, eating rations, doing paperwork, etc, to the truely gripping accounts of battle. Peeble's had a keen observation of his enemy and of the conduct of his superiors and those that were in his regiment.
Peeble's did his duty for his country and King admirably, however as the years go on (1776-1782) you can begin to see his change of feelings for the war. He begins to question why Great Britain is fighting and he is beginning to have grudging respect for the American "rebels". I am sure that he was one of the vast majority of British soldiers who, after a few years was questioning their country's resolve to end the Revolution. However, Peeble's did his duty and fought without question.
From the everyday account of camp life, battle, observations of Torries, rebels and common folk in the colonies, Peebles provides an invaluable account of what life was like during the Revolution from the opposing point of view.
At the end of the diary the editor does and excellent service and provides the follow up to the key figures of Peeble's diary furnishing what happened to the Generals, soldiers and people of importance after the war.
Overall this is an excellent read and is a MUST have for the serious student and enthusiast of the American Revolution.

One of the few first hand British Soldiers experience

A gripping book of one of the first hand accounts of the American Revolution. It is always interesting to read the "enemies" point of view during the time of the Revolution. John Peeble was an astute observer of not only the people of the American continent, but also the landscape and culture of early American society. A great mix of viewpoints of american battles, the Tories, the everyday hardship of being a soldier in an unfamiliar and sometimes hostile land. A MUST READ FOR THE SERIOUS STUDENT/TEACHER OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION AND COLONIAL EXPERIENCE.

A window on the 17th century

The daughters of the Stuart kings of England led lives that were anything but dull and boring. Elizabeth, the "Winter Queen" and her husband ruled Bohemia for less than a year before being unceremoniously evicted from Prague by troops of the Holy Roman Empire and ended up living in the Netherlands in near-poverty. Elizabeth's nieces had even more troubled lives; her namesake died in prison after the execution of her father, Charles I; the eldest, Mary, battles with her stepmother for the right to raise her fatherless son and the new Prince of Orange; while "Minette" struggles through an unhappy marriage (was she the Diana, Princess of Wales of her era?) to the brother of Louis XIV and dies young -- of poison, perhaps? Finally, the two princesses in the next generation, Anne and Mary, conspired to depose their own father -- successfully. Mary, married to her cousin William of Orange, succeeded James II in what came to be known as the "Glorious Revolution".

The wars of religion (which divided the Stuarts themselves) and the battles over the limits of royal power are the backdrop against which these six women lived out their lives, and the author does a very good job of not ignoring the historical context even as she weaves together a narrative that leads from one princess's life to the next. Not breaking this into separate sections is a wise decision, as the lives of all these women were connected in intriguing ways -- Mary of Orange saw her aunt Elizabeth as an ally and source of comfort during her own struggles, while Anne and Mary Stuart were the daughters of one of Mary of Orange's ladies in waiting -- a scandal at the time.

I was delighted to find a great biography dealing with Elizabeth of Bohemia, whose fascinating life has been given relatively short shrift by biographers so far. Indeed, few of these women will be well known to most readers, especially compared to the Tudors who seem to dominate English history being written today. I'm also pleased that Plowden doesn't overlook some other charactes, from the termagant Henrietta Maria (queen consort of Charles I) to Sophia, Elizabeth of Bohemia's youngest daughter, a wry observer of the Stuart family's excesses. Ultimately, it was her son who succeeded Anne Stuart (Queen Anne) on the throne of England in the early years of the 18th century -- although the Catholic branch of the Stuarts would resist that rule for more than half a century more.

Those looking for further reading on a lighter note could turn to a couple of excellent novels by Margaret Irwin, some of whose books are now being reissued. The Stranger Prince: The Story of Rupert of the Rhine deals with Elizabeth of Bohemia's famous son; The bride: The story of Louise and Montrose, revolving around Elizabeth of Bohemia's daughter (who later ran away from home to enter a Catholic nunnery and Royal Flush - The Story of Minette.

A very good history about exciting people and times

This book contains my very favorite scene in all of the history of the world: the two year old Princess Henrietta being smuggled out of the country during the Civil War, disguised as a poor french boy, loudly insisting "that her name was not Pierre but princess, and that the rough clothes she was wearing were not her own." Can't you just picture it?

It's just a little aside, really, but I think that it's a perfect example of why this is such a great book: it is full of fascinating historical details that show great deals of research, and the excellent writing style that really makes the characters come alive. Ms. Plowden purports to write a book about the six Stuart Princesses, and no interesting personal detail is too small to leave out.

The result is a fascinating study that follows these ladies through childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. I thought that the parts about their childhoods were the most interesting, since that gets overlooked in many history books. I definately recomend this book to anyone who is interested in this period, or in fascinating women in history.

A must for early childhood educators!

Dahlberg, Moss and Pence have written this scholarly book to call attention to a crisis of thought in early childhood education. The book is meant to provoke critical thinking of all we know about early childhood education and to rally concerned citizens--parents, educators, policitians and community--to critical discussion.
This book explores early childhood philosophies, constructivist thinking, and cites early childhood "experiments" such as Reggio Emilia and the Stockholm Project. It challenges and inspires on a global level.
I read this book first as a graduate school text, then again as a refresher for my own views on early childhood education. It will be read again and again!

Good read.

There are few books on Faustus in print, and many have to be special ordered. For the price, this book is an excellent find. The writing is engaging and interesting. The only complaint I have is the text is tiny. Even so, I'm sure if the text was any larger the book would be twice as thick. There is a lot of information here. There are also a few pages of pictures in the middle of the book, printed on glossy paper. This is a very nice book, which I recommend for anyone who wants to learn more about Faustus.

About the Author
Ulrike Schultz, qualified as a lawyer, is a Senior Academic at the University of Hagen, Germany. She is former Head of the Law Faculty's Teaching and Learning Unit specialised in media work; teaching gender and law at the law faculty; communication trainer for lawyers and the judiciary. Gisela Shaw worked as a freelance translator of philosophical publications and as part-time lecturer in German at Bristol University. In 1976 she joined the University of the West of England as a lecturer. She was awarded a personal chair in German studies and took on the post of Director of Research for the Faculty of Modern Languages and European Studies, until her retirement in 2002. Prior to eventually being made Emeritus Professor, she was awarded the title of Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences.
