Christmas Candy

If you are a Gilbert & Sullivan lover, then this is for you. This beautiful little book is full of backstage anicdotes, poems, stories and illustrations, many of which I have never seen before. If there is any disappointment, it might be that Sullivan's music is not as well represented. Lyrics to Christmas songs and carol are provided, but it needs a music CD to make it complete. Still, I recommend it.

About the Author
David Baldwin is a medieval historian who has taught at the Universities of Leicester and Nottingham for many years. His historical research has focused on the great medieval families in the Midlands and he has contributed articles to historical journals and lectured regularly to societies and conferences in this field. He is the author of six books, The Women of the Cousins' War: The Duchess, The Queen and the King's Mother, The Lost Prince: The Survival of Richard of York, Robin Hood: The English Outlaw Unmasked, Stoke Field: The Last Battle of the Wars of the Roses, and The Kingmaker's Sisters. He lives in Leicester.

If you enjoy reading about history this is a book one should read. I read it in 3 days. I couldn't put it down.

Excellent Read !

I thoroughly enjoyed tghis great book! Included is a lot of genealogy information that helps to sort out some of the complicated inter-related family lines. Mr. Baldwin includes many direct quotes from relevant documents that are, generally speaking, easier to read then I had thought they would be. Interesting to see how the language has morphed since then. What a woman Elizabeth Woodville must have been! This is a wonderful read for anyone interested in British history, the War of the Roses,the Princes in the tower mystery or the Queens of England.

I will also add that I have read several of Mr. Baldwin's books and they all of been well researched, historically accurate and very readable.

Worth reading, but not compelling

Readers with an interest in the Wars of the Roses will find this book about Elizabeth Woodville, Edward IV's Queen, and the mother of the "Princes in the Tower", perfectly readable, but not extremely compelling. This may be due to the relative scarcity of reliable, original source information about her. (I think much of the contemporary information about her is speculation about how she, a widow from the gentry class with two children, managed to attract and win the King, suggesting that witchcraft was involved.) My sense is the book may go a little far in "white-washing" her historical reputation as grasping, selfish, proud and haughty. I just don't think the sketchy information the author was able to marshall was convincing enough to really establish what kind of person Elizabeth actually was, one way or other.
Also, regarding the earlier reviewer's suggestion that Elizabeth's negative reputation owes to the Tudors "looking back in anger", it might pay to remember that Henry VIII's grandmother was, in fact, Elizabeth Woodville (his mother's mother), so I'm not certain how much her historical reputation is a result of this. I think it actually owes a lot more to her contemporary Yorkist rivals, who were threatened by her very unexpected emergence onto the scene and potential power she could wield as the King's wife, than to the later Tudors, a dynasty Elizabeth's own daughter founded when she married Henry Tudor.

Great Overall View of Tudor Enjoyments

In studying the Tudor era for my character role in a local Renaissance Faire, I ran across this book by Alison Sim during a search. It's a wonderful book divided into various chapters centering on separate items which made up Tudor enjoyments. Chapters in the book include clothing, architecture, reading, dancing, theatre, and hunting & games, to name a few. Ms. Sim's writing is not the least bit dry and makes the facts enjoyable to read about. It's a must for anyone like me who is studying the time period to improve upon their faire or SCA persona as well as to add to their knowledge in general.

This is a bit scholarly but I love it - it TELLS you what went on! Each chapter deals with a different subject in detail, but easy reading Not a fluff piece, which some people might not like, but still not dull or stuffy. Very informative for those who really want to know what it was like!

Social Linguistics and Literacies: Thoughtful & Provocative

It is difficult to get a hold of James Paul Gee's works-- they seem to always be out of stock. Although looking for The Social Mind, I ended up ordering Social Linguistics and Literacies, and would recommend it to anyone, but especially for the educator interested in scientific bases for critical pedagogy. Gee writes in a very approachable manner, and has much to say. He delves into his favorite subject, Discourses, from a linguistics perspective, but his audience is geared to the layman as well as to the scientist, the mark of a writer hoping to reach a wide audience. I certainly would be pleased if more people read what Gee had to say. We'd all know a lot more about why certain groups in our society are geared toward school success, and be able to discuss educational issues from a more informed and less superstitious perspective.

A must-read for non-profit managers and leadership teams

Michael Fullan continues to build for us a revolutionary new intellectual base for building management systems for complex human and social organizations. The development of chaos theory and methods of modeling complex non-linear systems is clearly moving way beyond the realm of fractals, imaging and mathematical theories, and into the very practical world where we desperately need a useful understanding of how management models and complex organizations interact. The mathematics of chaos brought us the realization that complex systems can be modeled and has emboldened people like Michael Fullan to attempt it in the field of education--with spectacular results. This latest book--perhaps easier to read than its predecessor, but still demanding of the intellect--brings us up to date with some of the latest thinking in the field of "change management" and how it can help lead us toward truly lasting and powerful educational reform.

Making a Difference

This book is an excellent resource for school districts about to embark on major reform initiatives. It is very easy to read and conversational in style. The illustrations and case studies were excellent. Concepts such as 'groupthink' and its pros and cons proved interesting. There were good comparisons as to how the business world thinks compared to what occurs in public education efforts to implement ideas, theories and lessons. Eight lessons from previous materials by the author were reviewed and I found this to be helpful. The emphasis on the importance of collaborative efforts in schools with parents,community and business leaders as partners is more timely than ever. The emphasis on the role of parents and the community in collaboration is necessary for the survival and success of any school district and its reform efforts. The three forces, intellectual, political, and spiritual fusion were well-defined and illustrated nicely for comprehension. It might have been useful to include student accountability and the orle it plays in collaboration. Accountability and responsibility are key to any successful learning taking place in the mind of today's students. This book could also be used as a resource when working with educators to understand change and apply it to what they do daily. The emphasis on moral purpose serving as the vehicle for making a difference in our work as educators serves as a constant reminder as to why most of us chose to enter this profession in the first place.

A good read for those embarking on true effective change

"Change Forces: The Sequel" takes an in depth look at how making a difference in the lives of students is essential to successful school reform. The reader is re-introduced to the concept of collaboration and the positive implications that it can have upon the change process. The book reinforces the belief that resistance and conflict are actually positive traits in helping to attain and sustain effective change. The text does an excellent job of leading the reader to a better understanding of how the change process, both internally and externally, must be understood and routinely modified. This, in turn, will allow the entire change process to become practice. The book further discusses Fullan's eight lessons, which help the reader better understand the complexity of change.
The common bond that each of these lessons has is that one is only as effective as the other is, when used in combination. Within these lessons, Fullan describes "inside collaboration" and “outside collaboration”. He reiterates the importance of working collaboratively within the organization and within the community. He stresses the importance of "reflective evaluation"(an ongoing process that should involve all members and aspects of the community affected by the change). Establishing trust, a strong accountability system, and innovativeness are all essential factors in helping an organization successfully embark upon change. Those involved in the change process must first be educated, then allowed to proceed.
The premise of this book is that if true change/reform is to evolve into practice, then all the forces, externally and internally, must employ one another collaboratively. It does an exemplary job of building upon Fullan's theory of change, and allowing any facet of any organization, the capability to use the principles and theories he proposes.
