Iconoclastic, densely researched, mythbusting study of sexuality in fashion focusing on corsetry

In this brilliant, profusely illustrated, densely researched book, David Kunzle comprehensively and sympathetically, with the more-than-occasional flash of dry British humor, surveys the history of fetishism in fashion from prehistoric times to the Internet age (this review is of the 2004 hardback edition by Sutton Publishing; the most recent paperback printing by the History Press dates from 2006). His focus is most especially on the Victorian era through the early 21st century; he comments at several points that women's fashion in the 1870's was, in its emphasis on the feminine shape with various enhancements such as high heels and bustles, among the most explicitly fetish-oriented in fashion history. While he gives extensive attention to various articles of clothing, particularly shoes, that have been eroticized and fetishized, he concentrates, quite reasonably, on the corset, probably the most eroticized and fetishized of all items of costume - the subtitle of his book is "Corsets, Tight-Lacing and Other Forms of Body Sculpture". (One chapter, "The Corset as Erotic Alchemy", is an expansion and update of a long essay that he wrote for the 1972 book "Woman as Sex Object", which is also available on the Amazon Marketplace.) As I mentioned in a comment on another review of this book several months ago, the footnotes are lengthy and highly detailed - Kunzle apologizes for their length but he shouldn't; these are among the best footnotes I've ever seen in any book, so much so that readers will find themselves consulting them as often as the main text, not least because they contain a wealth of additional information and commentary.

Received opinion among fashion historians, feminists, medical authorities, sociologists and much of the general public has long been that corsetry in general and tight-lacing in particular were both inherently oppressive of women and injurious to women's health. Kunzle (who writes from a left-wing, femininst perspective himself) thoroughly demolishes this conventional wisdom (recently expressed, for example, by Leigh Summers in her book "Bound To Please"), unearthing and discussing a significant body of evidence to demonstrate that (1) tight-lacing was always a minority interest rather than being the standard practice during the eras when corsets were standard in women's costume; (2) as opposed to simply being a matter of reducing women to a subservient position - though Kunzle acknowledges that this did occur - tight-lacing, especially in the Victorian era, was in truth often a method of sexual rebellion and liberation by both women and men; and (3) that much, indeed most, of the propaganda accusing tight-lacing of damaging women's health and bodies was exactly that, propaganda (and indeed, often poorly-researched and sometimes downright hysterical propaganda at that), written by social and religious conservatives who were alarmed by the transgressive and rebellious attitudes expressed by tight-lacing. In particular, Kunzle demolishes a lot of so-called expert medical opinion of the 19th century on the dangers of corsetry by demonstrating that those warnings were very often written by doctors who were, in fact, expressing their own prejudices rather than reporting the results of properly-conducted scientific and medical research.

A classic analysis of the corset and tightlacing

I first heard of David Kunzle's book through a review written by Angela Carter. The book puts forward what was a novel argument at the time it was written - namely, that use of the corset and tightlacing was not simply a sign of the social oppression of women, but that it was simulataneously a rebellion against that oppression. Particularly focussing on the Victorian era, he argues that use of the corset was subversive, in view of the socially sanctioned role for women as sexless 'angels in the house' - tightlacing being overtly sexual, and not seen as consistent with housewifely duties. He marshals an impressive array of data in support of this thesis, particularly from the vehement anti-feminist opposition. Fascinating social history - highly recommended.

Disappointing

Very disappointing. While many good points are made, they are couched in academic "double think", i.e., the author has so much difficulty making a clear point that he consistently says, "What I mean by that is..." Where was the editor? The research fundamentally describes a business coaching environment, so it is not especially valuable to those who seek guidance in other coaching arenas. I would like to note that while I did not like it, it may serve others-- particularly if your coaching is in a business environment.

A textbook for the practioner

This is heavy reading, but well worth it. Remeber your college philosophy classes and associated textbooks? Well, Flaherty takes the beauty and probing questions of philosphy and creates practical use of them by applying them to the art of coaching. Flaherty relies heavily on a few of his favorite modern philosophers, and takes their discoveries and theories and converts them into assessment models, enrollment techniques, etc. What you end up with is a very lucid, free flowing book that allows the coach to see the client as a human being with varying motivations, competencies, agendas, etc., and frees us from the trap of attempting to coach our clients into becoming ourselves (someone with our values, motivations, etc.); instead allowing them to grow into their own self-correcting, self-generating person.
One caveat, this book looks just as much at the growth of the coach as it does at the growth of the client. In fact, the author asserts that failed coaching often stems from a coaches inability to completely appreciate the client for who s/he is (their motivations, world interpretation, etc.); this falls under the topic of Relationship in the book, and essentially discusses the meaning and importance of mutual appreciation, respect and freedom of expression. He advocates self discovery and continued growth of the coach; allowing yourself to learn from your client while they learn from you.
In summary, the book moves us away from simply using techniques and models as our "catch all" coaching tools and moves us towards understanding the unique human being, their unique situation, their unique drive, their unique interpretation of the world, etc. The author also encourages coaches to understand their own humanity, including their own mortality, so that our connections with our clients are more solid and hopefully more fruitful.
Although the author does provide some assessment model examples, don't expect a step by step coaching program from this work. The author throws out ideas to stimulate our own thinking about ourselves and our clients' needs. It is left up to us to put the theories, suggestions and ideas into a workable form that can be used in our coaching practices.
A note on the heavy, textbook quality of this work: It is just that. It is an amazing, thought provoking work, but it's college textbook like quality (the author does begin to throw in humor around page 90 or so) can be a little rough to get through (hence the 4 out of 5 stars).
If you don't mind free-flowing structure that allows you to draw your own conclusions, or are looking for a humanistic view on this sector of consulting, then this work is for you.

"Must" reading for Hornblower fans

Of all the fictional characters in literature, only a handful have been compelling enough to be appropriated directly into stories by writers other than their original creators. Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes is one such character. C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower is another. This work by C. Northcote Parkinson is just such a continuation story, but with a twist. Instead of an historical novel, Parkinson writes the book as if it were an actual biography complete with illustrated plates, footnote citations to other (probably fictional) sources, and extended quotes from letters supposedly written by the characters. The Hornblower enthusiast will appreciate the few extra episodes wedged into the chronology created by the original author, as well as a detailed account of Hornblower's ancestry, boyhood, and forty years of life after the period of active service originally chronicled by Forester. But the purist might take exception to one or two new characters that Parkinson takes the liberty of introducing. Parkinson is also quite knowledgeable about the period, and does an excellent job of framing a life such as Hornblower's within the society (both civilian and naval) in which the character is supposed to have lived.
Although written as a serious biography, the author is clearly a Hornblower fan having a bit of fun as his retirement project. Parkinson is best known as the originator of "Parkinson's Law" (work expands to occupy available time) and the author of a popular series of humorous but pointed commentaries on management practices written in the 1950's and 1960's. In these books, he often feigns being a sociologist discovering universal principles of human behavior. So it is no surprise that he should follow up with this story in which he pretends to be an historian researching an actual person. The same tongue in cheek humor is at work.

For Hornblower Fans

This is a reprint of the author's 1970 fictional biography of Horatio Hornblower. C. S. Forester wrote the first five Hornblower novels in chronological order, starting with Hornblower's service as a Royal Navy captain in 1807 and continuing to 1815 when the war ended and most of the Royal Navy was laid up. In the sixth book, he skipped back to cover the beginnings of Hornblower's career as a midshipman. That point seems to have been lost to later authors like O'Brien (who invented ways to keep Aubrey at sea, rather than dropping back to cover his early beginnings).
Parkinson created this biography by placing the Forester novels in chronological order, and then adding in details to explain Hornblower's early life, his family, and his years in retirement. It is so well written it is difficult to classify the book as fiction. The recent made-for-TV motion pictures on Hornblower have changed the details of the stories to a significant degree, but are generally following Hornblower's career (there was no Court Martial in Jamaica, only an inquiry, with the blame for Sawyer's death laid on the escaped Spanish prisoners, and no charge of anyone pushing him into the ship's hold).
Parkinson himself is an exceptionally good author of novels covering the Royal Navy of that time period. I am pleased to see that those novels are now being reprinted.

This book traces the development of British military intelligence from the disasters in the Crimea and through to World War I. Wireless and mail intercepts grew in importance, and a department collected information from prison camps. The East African Intelligence Department recruited big game hunters and Africans. While intelligence failures at Gallipoli still resonated, MI in the Middle East adapted to fighting that was rarely positional. On the Home Front, counter-intelligence minimized the risk of German espionage, sabotage, and subversion and tackled terrorism as the IRA fought for independence. From this moment on, Britain never lost the lead in MI, up to and beyond WWII.

About the Author
Nick van der Bijl is a former Regular and Territorial Army soldier, mainly in the Intelligence Corps. He saw active service in Northern Ireland and also the Falklands Campaign with 3rd Commando Brigade. On leaving the army, he has been employed in security management in the defense industry, and then the NHS. He is the author of more than a dozen books, including Sharing The Secret: A History of the Intelligence Corps 1940-2010. He is a trustee of the Military Intelligence Museum.

Best technical book I have ever read.

This book is very well organized. I found it extremely informative. Starts with the history of PC board processes and modern techniques, design and limitation. It guides you through several examples of PC board design and schematic design also. It shows you how to use AutoCad to generate Gerber and Excellon files for PC board House production.
The floppy included with the book contains example files that are used in the book. The floppy also contains utilities and librarys of symbols and parts.
This is a great book. It leaves nothing out. You will find everything here.
I really did not know much about how to use AutoCad, but by reading and working the examples, I learned how professionals use AutoCad.
Many technical books leave out key points and jump from subject to subject. Some even change terminology slightly and leave you wondering. Not this one. This book is a precise work.
Its clear, that the author is an expert in this field. WHAT A GREAT, LEARNING EXPERIENCE.

Good but...British

I agree with the point made above: "a comprehensive introduction to the issues central to the practice of assessment. Teachers, administrators, and other educators are exposed to the critical aspects of assessment...." But it is not clear that the author is talking about assessment in Britain with just occasional reference to assessment in the USA. The conceptual coverage seems good but the examples given require students and instructor to constantly search for a comparable assessment in the USA. This can interfere with the actual learning. If the book is used as a refresher with teachers and administrators who already have experience with a variety of assessments it may work better but it is not for those inexperienced in assessment in US schools.
