A fascinating read

This book was such a rewarding read. Kate Luard was in her forties in 1914 with experience of nursing during the Second Boer War. Kate enlisted in the Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve on August 6, 1914, two days after war was declared. She served in France & Belgium until 1918, first on the ambulance trains and then in Casualty Clearing Stations. She was awarded the RRC (Royal Red Cross) and Bar (rare distinction) and was twice mentioned in Dispatches for gallant and distinguished service in the field. The book tells her remarkable story through her own war diary and the prolific amount of letters to her family at home.

One of 13 children, Kate came from a loving and close-knit family. She wasn't a dewy eyed young girl shocked or overwhelmed by her experiences and what she was witnessing as some First World War nurses have been depicted in recent TV drama. This is really how it was and the family of Kate Luard have done a remarkable job in re-publishing Unknown Warriors, first published in 1930, now virtually impossible to obtain a copy of and including an extra chapter.

Kate Luard was without doubt a talented writer. The book is so rich in descriptive detail, making it a most fascinating read. The scarcity of diaries or accounts written by trained military nurses during the 14-18 conflict means that this a rare and quite unique record chronicling the events of the lives, work and off duty of nurses on the Western Front.

You will feel sorry for both the queens

At times is hard to read with the Latin and French words. The author's translation of old world English made me lose my place a few times. it was filed with intrigue and murderous plots. Mary queen of Scots with down right miserable and you want to admire Elizabeth. Even to the end Mary was as stubborn as they come. It is true her only real duty was to produce an heir.

It was ok

I was a little disappointed with this book because it didn't cover any new ground for me. But more importantly, the style began to grate on me about half way through the book, to the point where I just wanted to get it over with. I felt Alison Plowden relied too heavily on extracts from comments and speeches made by people of that era. These were popped in every now and again which, for me, meant I would "lose the plot". I'd have to re-read sections because I couldn't remember what point was being made. And, not being an expert in "old English" (despite the fact that I was born in England, and my daughters keep telling me I'm old!), I'd sometimes struggle to understand what was being said. Still, this is only the humble opinion of one reviewer, and I'm sure that there would be a great many people to whom this style would be perfectly acceptable. Having said all that, it wasn't a "bad" book. I'm pleased I bought it, and wouldn't like to have missed out on reading it.

WONDERFUL!

I read this book for a British History class and loved it. Plowden makes the history of the relationship between Elizabeth and Mary come alive with many anecdotes. She describes in such detail the way the two lived and the era that the reader can almost visualize it.
I've read a few of her other books and they're all wonderful. But this one gives you more than just the stereotypical story you hear "Elizabeth felt threatened. Elizabeth had Mary beheaded." The entire crusading movement was a remarkable combination of religious idealism (or fanaticism) and venality on a grand scale. However, with the Fourth Crusade (1202^-04) all pretenses of "noble" motives died. From its inception, the Crusade was encouraged, financed, and controlled by Venetian merchants for commercial reasons. The consequences were immense, but they did not include the reconquest of the Holy Land. Instead, the Crusade resulted in the brutal sack of Constantinople, the richest city in the Christian world, by an army of drunken, frustrated crusaders. The great eastern Christian Byzantine Empire was fatally weakened, leading to the eventual conquest of the region by the Ottoman Turks. Bartlett, author of God Wills It!: The Illustrated History of the Crusades (1999), has captured the cynicism, savagery, and tragic ironies that lay behind this shameful episode. This is an excellent work of popular history geared to general readers, but scholars will appreciate both the accuracy and insight Bartlett displays. Jay Freeman

Be Wary.

Just a quick comment. The book seems extremely biased and appears to analyze a medieval event using a variety of modern perspectives, such as nationalism and economic determinism. The author seems to be have overestimated the power of man to control events and underestimated the complexity, unpredictability, and recalcitrance of the events themselves. In addition, although the Latins and Greeks shared a common faith, they disagreed over key theological issues and differed in history, language, and habits. Therefore, one must not conclude that the crusaders of the Fourth Crusade were acting against the same force that drove crusaders to the First Crusade. The Greeks were outsiders to Latin communities, and thus were treated in a manner similar to that of Muslims and heretics.

Very Unevenly Written Work

I found this book of very uneven quality. Although the author obviously knows his subject, he fails to present it cogently or with fludidity. A too frequent experience was to be jolted into an entirely unrelated idea after the first sentence of a paragraph. The few but glaring grammatical/spelling errors did not help, though that is the falut of the editor and not the author. The maps provided were wholly inadequate to the topic and the information provided by the author. Read this book only if you must absolutely read everything every written about the Fourth Crusade.

This book was a huge help in my research paper on the Fourth Crusade and it lasting effects on Constantinople. There is an abundance of usefull information which is all understandable and easy to read. This is an excellent work of popular history geared tward general readers, but scholars will apperciate the acuracy and insight that Bartlett displays.

Too popularized to be academic and too dry to be enjoyable

Ziegler's "The Black Death" is obviously intended to be a popularized account of the infamous bubonic plague that swept Europe in the late 1300s. Unfortunately, the book suffers from the worst of both worlds. It is too full of statistics and academic arguments to be an easily readable book, and yet has nothing new to offer that would make it interesting to the academic. There is nothing wrong with writing a book based only on previously published sources, but Ziegler does not do a good job of integrating these sources together. He discusses the relative merits of this method of computing the number of dead and that method of computing the number of dead; this discussion takes pages. One gets the feeling that a good editor was needed, to go through the book with a red pen and make Ziegler cut these pages of boring exposition down to mere paragraphs. Unfortunately, one also gets the feeling that these pages were left in because without them, the book would be exceedingly slender.
A few other complaints: an entire chapter was devoted to a fictional village. Why? Ziegler writes that it is to provide a look at what an average village would suffer, but surely some village, somewhere in England, was thoroughly enough documented that Ziegler did not have to resort to fiction. (I would be much less disapproving if the writing in this chapter had been better.)
The book is also overly concerned with documenting the progress of the plague: first it went here, where it killed X number of people, then it went here, where it killed Y number of people. As with the pages of tedious discussion about academic theories, this leaves one with the overall feeling that this book was written, not out of any abiding interest in the subject, but because he thought it would sell. Ziegler discusses (very briefly) medieval treatments of the plague, as well as its symptoms. What I was hoping for as I read that section was that Ziegler would then explain why those treatments did not work, and what the current treatment for bubonic plague is. Unfortunately, Ziegler didn't seem to have much interest in the plague as a disease: just on its progression through and impact on the middle ages.
Connie Willis' "Doomsday Book," while fiction, is much more readable, and (to my admittedly inexpert eyes) just as well-researched as "The Black Death." Certainly I learned little new about the bubonic plague from "The Black Death" that I did not already know from reading other (nonfiction) books on the middle ages.

Ziegler's The Black Death was the only book I could find after a television documentary piqued my interest in the subject. I was worried the book would be too scholarly but, to my surprise, I found the writing style very pleasant and engaging. It is one of the best books I have read all year.
Originally published in 1969, Ziegler gathered sources on the plague from the period to more recent examinations to try to create the most accurate picture possible of what it was like in Medieval Europe during 1348-1350 and the effects the Black Death had on Europe. Ziegler admits in his preface that he did not conduct any original research but he does critique the works of others, especially Thorold Rogers' theory that the Black Plague caused the Peasant's Revolt of 1381 (p. 188). He includes a chapter each on Italy, France, and Germany; the latter of which saw the emergence of the Flagellant movement and persecution of the Jews based on suspicions similar to those used in Nazi Germany. England is covered the most with 5 chapters and a 6th on Wales, Ireland, and Scotland. Ziegler demonstrates the fear of the people right from the beginning when the plague entered Europe through Sicily. The patriarch of Catania wished to bring relics to nearby, plague-ridden Messina only to have the Catanians protest against the idea. In compromise, the patriarch dipped the relics in water and brought the water to the suffering neighbors (p. 28).
Ziegler describes what Medieval life was like in sometimes witty style: "The medieval house might have been built to specifications approved by a rodent council" (p. 199). Period ideas on how to prevent infection are also interesting, including a elixir made of gold and quicksilver: "At least the high price of gold ensured that not many invalids could afford to be poisoned by such medicine" (p. 55). The chapter on the fictitious villages I also found to be very well-done and a nice change of pace from the somewhat statistically-driven prose.
Two things I wish were in this book are a better map and more information on what the plague sufferer went through besides the obvious symptoms like boils. A map is included but it is inadequate as it does not list all (or even a small percentage of) the villages mentioned. Still, the book is well-written AND scholarly. Ziegler is very careful to qualify statements, avoid generalizations, and fairly critique all statistics given about the plague. My copy also has numerous illustrations and a color section on period plague-related art. It is made very evident the horror of the Black Death through such statements as: "Peterborough, another of those low-lying areas which were so remarkably well treated by the plague, [had a mortality] level notably below the average at a mere 27%" (p. 138).

DEATH DOESN'T TAKE A HOLIDAY

This was an interesting excursion by Mr. Ziegler into the Medieval Era, not usually thought of as his milieu. He acknowledges right up front that he has not done any original research, but has merely brought the material of others together and drawn some conclusions. But, in such a controversial field as this, drawing intelligent conclusions is no mean feat.
Mr. Ziegler starts off the book giving the big picture, showing the Tartars attacking a Genoese trading post in Asia. The Tartar forces are stricken down by the plague and, using some creative tactics, start catapulting some diseased corpses into the Genoese compound. The Genoese quickly get the message and escape by sea back to Europe. The rest, as they say, is history.....
The author has a few chapters where he gives an overview of what happened in Italy, Germany and France. In Germany, in an eerie precursor of things to come centuries later, the Jews are blamed for the calamity and are accused of spreading the plague by poisoning wells. Attacks on Jews, along with the epidemic, spread from town to town.
The great majority of the book deals with what happened in England. I don't know if this was Mr. Ziegler's preference or if he felt that the best documentation pertained mostly to the British Isles. He discusses how many people died in various areas of the country; what happened to wage levels and to prices; how the established Church and the various mendicant orders were affected; etc. The author presents all sides of the issues and draws, at least to me, reasonable conclusions.
With the exception of a couple of chapters midway through the book, where the repetitive statistics put me into a stupor, the book is lively and well-written. One especially good chapter deals with what it would have been like to live in a village before and after it was ravaged by the plague. This chapter helps to put the statistics into human terms, as was Mr. Ziegler's intent.
I would have liked some more material on the other countries, and this is what prevents me from giving the book 5 stars. But, still, Mr. Ziegler has done a very good job. This is a fine book.

Over the last 17 years he has authored or edited nine books on religion and education. A study of an enigma

In 1993 there seemed, at least for a brief time, that a solution to the question of "Who was Jack the Ripper?" had been found. A diary supposedly written by James Maybrick of Liverpool, recording his activities as the famous murderer, was released. Immediately a firestorm of controversy exploded, if for no other reason than the whole scenario seemed unbelievable -- Maybrick was a well-known figure in his own right, being the victim of a famous murder in 1889. Was the diary genuine? Experts weighed in on both sides of the question. Test results were ambiguous -- was the diary a recent forgery or was it decades old (and if decades old, was it a decades-old forgery)? The handwriting did not resemble that of Maybrick's will, but claims were made that the will itself was a forgery. The man credited with bringing the diary forth claimed in an alcoholic haze that he had forged the diary, then rescinded his claim (and, admittedly, forging the diary seems a bit beyond his capabilities). An old watch inscribed with the name of James Maybrick and with the initials of the Jack the Ripper victims was discovered, supporting the diary's authenticity, and a number of experts who examined the watch believed that the inscriptions had been made many years ago. To this day, no-one knows for sure about the Maybrick diary, although I think it fair to say that the majority of Ripperologists do not accept it. "Ripper Diary" is the story of that controversy, not seeking either to authenticate or refute the Maybrick diary, but presenting a detailed account of the people involved and what happened to them. There are no final answers here, but I think that anyone seriously interested in Jack the Ripper (and the phenomenon of fascination with Jack the Ripper) would be rewarded by reading this book -- if not to change or make up their minds about the Maybrick diary, then at least to better understand the sequence of events and the nature of the controversy.

rather silly really

This book is really defeated in its purpose by the rather silly selectivity and obvious agenda of its authors, who are presenting themselves as objective commentators while putting forward a rather selective and biased set of 'facts' in order to try beyond all reason to keep the dull dead question of the 'ripper diary' alive.

They strive, manfully (and womanfully) to give the impression that this is a book delving into a deep and dark mystery; that they are like Howard Carter illuminating buried gold with their brave candle of enquiry, and to keep this 'Unsolved Mysteries' atmosphere going they pump smoke and questionmarks over what is actually a pretty straightforward situation.

The dull truth beyond this comic gothic 'but how!?' style of presentation, is the 'diary' is a fake. It is almost certainly a modern fake and the only question (and not really a very interesting one) is which one of a fairly small group of contenders may have actually done the forging.

In an endeavour to make this dull uninteresting reality into an ongoing 'mystery' the trio of authors have to play some rather curious and bizarre word games with the truth, and claim deep dark 'uncertainties' where there are really none.

They fuddle the results of the ink tests (which pretty conclusively showed the ink was modern), and gasp and sigh and scratch their heads in bafflement over 'puzzles' and motivations that wouldn't in reality give a five year old much pause.

Because of this ludicrous inflation, it becomes a totally unreliable and rather silly work, striving to be far more self-important and meaningful than it ever could be. Rather a pointless volume really which is like a personification of flogging the proverbial, long dead, horse.

Very Intriguing

The so-called 'Maybrick' diary represents bizarre, yet fascinating sideshow to the whole Jack-the-Ripper story. The emergence of this disputed journal has sparked an epic and convoluted saga that sometimes reads like a novel. Indeed, the incredible rancour that the has arisen over the diary is often hard to credit and one has to wonder over the number of people who have allowed their lives to be dominated by it.

The authors of this current book have very carefully avoided taking definite sides over the authenticity of the diary and have carefully documented the history of the diary in the ten years since it came to public attention. For the most part, the book is a good read but occasionally the story is a bit dense and some of the story of infighting between the concerned parties can get a bit tedious. I also found that the huge cast of characters made the proceedings a bit hard to follow and it struck me that a brief 'dramatis personae' at the start of the book might have made things a bit easier.

Quibbles aside, though, this will be a fascinating story for all Ripperologists, especially those who have already read Shirley Harrison's The Diary of Jack the Ripper: The Chilling Confessions of James Maybrick.
