The highs and lows of royal fortune over 100 years

This book covers roughly one hundred years of later royal Stuart history, concentrating on the daughters of the dynasty. It starts with the birth of Princess Elizabeth, daughter of James 1st and continues through to the reign of Queen Anne, the last Stuart sovereign.
We are told something of the lives of most of the women in the Stuart family from 1596 to 1714, however the biographies concentrate on Elizabeth, Queen of Bohemia, who is better known to history as the Winter Queen, the daughters of Charles 1st, Mary, Princess of Orange, Elizabeth (who died young) and Henriette-Anne (usually known as Minette), favourite sister of Charles II and last of all Queens Mary and Anne, the last of their house.
We are not given individual separate biographies, instead the author has woven the stories of all these royal women in and out of each other as the times changed and their lives intersected. This has resulted in some small loss of detail in some of these lives, but the reigns of Queens Mary and Anne are the most noticeable in only giving you a sketch of their lives on the throne. The lives of the Queen of Bohemia and Minette are probably the best written in detail in this book.
Although it may help if you have read something of this period before as the author appears to have made a few assumptions on prior knowledge of basic `big events' of the period discussed, this is overall a great introduction to the lives of these women, and it is one of the few modern books where you will find biographies of these various ladies all in one place.

As a real history buff - especially interested in the Tudors and Stuarts - I really couldn't wait for this book to arrive. I wasn't disappointed! The book is well written, sympathetic without being cloying and a good basis of understanding for these girls and women. I would highly recommend this book for someone interested in history...or anxious to help a sister, daughter or niece become interested!

An essential "How-To" for herbal treatments & therapies.

I have browsed several books on herbal medicine and treatments. While all suggested herbs for various maladies - none told me how use the herb (root or flower?) or how to make the various ointments, or tinctures or what the common dosage should be. This book was the first I found that does! For anyone curious about the history of herbal medicine and what practical treatments can be used, this is the book to start with!

A New Classic Herbal

As a practicing herbalist and herbal teacher I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I have given out several copies as gifts over the years and have urged my students to get a copy for their personal libraries. The photographs of the herbs and the easy reference sidebars makes this the perfect book for beginners and aging experts. Thought not as comprehensive as some herbals in print, it is far more practical and useful then 90 percent of the material being touted as herbals. I hope Ms. Ody updates this wonderful book in the near future.

A little frustrating

The book is lovely as far as pictures goes, but she leaves out some basic stuff that a beginner wants to know. I managed to figure it out, but it wasn't easy. For instance, she tells you to use a simple, but then doesn't explain the term.
I bought the book specifically to make eucalypus oil and a cough syrup, but she really doesn't tell you which method, hot or cold. With the herb Comfrey, she tells you it's a hot infusion and with Marigold she tells you it's a cold infusion. Being a beginner, I didn't know the difference between an infused oil and an essential oil, which caused alot of frustration. If she had devoted a couple of sentences under the infused oil section explaining that essential oils are very different and need specialized equipment, it would have saved me some frustration and less disappointment of the book. I had to find this out by searching on the internet.
She is from the United Kingdom and all her recipes are in european measures, so they all have to be converted, and I really had a hard time with that, maybe you won't. Although she does give you a conversion table for dosages. I did manage to make a cough syrup but I had doubts about my calculations. My husband is still alive, by the way.
She mentions Cherry bark as one of the remedies for coughs but doesn't have Cherry bark in the visual directory, which means there is no information on it at all.
After having said all of that, the descriptions and pictures of each plant is wonderful. Also, she lists combinations that are good together, like for coughs. There are 85 herbs listed in the book. It makes a good reference, but I will definately need another book to supplement it.

This is a great little manual for anyone and everyone looking to spice up their sex lives! Have owned this for a week and it is truly one of the best sexual help books on the market. This book covers all the bases from beginners to more advanced love-making positions. It also offers helpful advice for individual self-pleasure techniques in addition to couples. Detailed, yet easy to understand and beautifully photographed (there is an especially attractive couple in the Tao Positions chapter from pages 178-185;-). A wonderful and informative read!

This is a great book to 'discover' new sexual paths in a relationship. Introduces & describes sexual positions, massages & other pleasure-oriented devices that, because of the book's presentation, are exceptionally easy to share with your partner. Handy. You'll learn something new every time you pick it up - further, you'll be inspired to try it out! (I especially liked 'wibbling' on page 95. I tried it last night and she loved it....

No more than a greatest hits anthology

Having read AH's Kama Sutra, which is excellent, I had high hopes of this guide. I was disappointed to find that it was practically an advertisement for her other books, especially the Kama and massage books. And I'm mystified how any "Great Sex" book can leave out a discussion of the G-spot. I did learn a couple of techniques that will become priceless, but as an anatomist, I have to warn you that the "three handed massage" should be performed with water based lubricant, and the "Jen Mo" point should be avoided. In my opinion, this guide should be free with the purchase of one of her books so that the reader can get a feel for her other publications.

Good Experience From One Who Has Been There

In Mr. Ganssle's book he states, "Engineers are notoriously poor communicators..." and some of that truth shows in his book. The chapters, sections, and appendices are well organized but the content in them is not. The writing style has a tendency to ramble like a friendly conversation, sometimes deviating into tangential material. However, the experience and wisdom held in the book's content (even the tangential parts) are its greatest prize. As an embedded developer with seven years of experience, I found myself frequently relating to the author's own experience. When I read the sentence, "We've got to avoid quoting a long, arbitrary time impact as a knee-jerk reaction to any change request." I actually laughed out loud. Mr. Ganssle does a good job of contrasting a disciplined, well-documented development process versus a panicked, haphazard one and he explains the trade-offs between the two by quoting respectable studies on the subject. The material on writing and debugging good embedded code is all stuff that most folks will, hopefully, learn after few years on the job. But, if you're just starting out, or if you're looking for a better way to do your job, I recommend that you read this book.

Embedded Systems Guru Knowledge Base

This text is obviously a distillation of many years of experience in the field. I have programmed enough ISR's and programmable devices to know that it is very good advise indeed. The book, however, is not for the beginner. His assumed audience are people who are already in the field and would like to take advantage someone with greater experience. The book is loaded with hard learned nuggets of wisdom that are less likely to be found in classroom textbooks. He has something to offer both software and hardware types(I'm software). For example, the advise about software partitioning, ISR development and debugging, and device programming is excellent, and for hardware types the advise on building boards that are both software and hardware debuggable and the myriad tips on finding problems from the common to the obscure will be appreciated. He also provides suggested project management guidelines that help in getting functionality operating as quickly as possible, and, from my point of view, guidance on how to deal with irrational schedules and managements that are reluctant to provide adequate project resources. I appreciated expecially his citing research that quiet private offices provide the single greatest boost to engineering productivity. Probably the only thing I found lacking in the book was a Bibliography of other book references and useful web links.

This is a really poorly written and poorly organized collection of ramblings from an embedded systems "expert." Each topic is covered at a grossly superficial level and most sections consist of short random thoughts. Here's a typical paragraph (from the 2 pages on real time operating systems).
"Improvements to these tools come almost daily. Keep on top of the field to avoid the fate of the dinosaurs."
Speaking of dinosaurs, the author's favorite tool for debugging and performance analysis seems to be the oscilloscope.
I get the feeling that the author "wrote" this book by talking into a tape recorder while in an LSD haze on the way to Las Vegas.
BTW, the page count is 243 and not 352 claimed in the advertising for this book. Thankfully, the editors saw fit to trash at least a portion of this book.
My only regret in writing this review is that the Amazon rating service doesn't offer the option of giving 0 stars.

Perfect appetizer for a Highland visit

One of the things I love about traveling is getting a good sense of the history of a place I'm visiting. I bought "Flight of Bonnie Prince Charlie" in anticipation of a trip to Scotland, and it was perfect for that purpose. Although it provides an excellent history, it seems designed for the visitor; it's equal parts travel and history.
This book gives a day-by-day description of the Prince's 5 months in hiding from the British before he was able to escape to France. He trekked hundreds of miles on foot, in disguise (once, famously, as a ladies' maid!), sometimes passing within earshot of the soldiers hunting him. The book is liberally illustrated with modern photographs of the particular glens and mountains Charlie passed by, as well as reproductions of painted portraits, etc. of the main participants.
Even better, each part of Charlie's escape is accompanied by a detailed map showing where he was on almost a night-by-night basis. In the appendix there are even driving directions and a list of relevant places for tourists to visit.
If you don't know the story behind Charlie's daring escape, you could not start at a better place.

All the information you need, in an attractive package

The authors manage to tell the story of Prince Charles Edward Stuart's flight from the disaster that was the Battle of Culloden in vivid detail without including so much detail as to become tedious. Coupled with the inclusion of wonderful photography and maps, this book leaves the reader with a full grasp of what the pleasant Prince and his various protectors, guides and benefactors went through during his five months as a fugitive in the Scottish countryside.
The authors also gave great detail, without undue romanticism, of young Flora MacDonald's role in the Prince's escape.
People interested in the history of Great Britain in general, and Scottish history in particular will greatly enjoy this book.

A unique look at the subject

I have bought two of Hugh Douglas's books on Amazon: this and the biography of Flora MacDonald. This book goes step by step through the Scottish countryside, showing where the Pretender went on his travels in the Rebellion of 1745 - 46. Photographs show the landscapes he would have seen, which are presumably unchanged since that time. Mr. Douglas has thoroughly done his research. The only drawback to this text is that it would best be used in Scotland itself, if the reader was willing to make the journey to the villages and wild spaces which are covered in the Pretender's flight. Reading it in America gives only a glimpse at best to the story.
