This book should be a top choice of most readers who are interested in the Normandy Campaign. The book vividly describes the "hell" of this little know battle. The first person accounts, while common in the book, really describe the problems and bravery of the Canadians during this crucial period. The author also ties in the larger picture as well as writes about the weapons used. This book is a great follow on to Blanford's "Both Sides of the Beach", as well as "Steel Inferno" by Michael Reynolds. One of the better first person accounts around.

A Major Disappointment

With regret, I must conclude that this book misses the mark ... and by a considerable distance. I have a major interest in Canadian military history and was looking for a book that would tell the whole story of the unique Canadian divisions' breakout from Normandy. What I got was a long string of extracts from offical records combined with personal accounts ... lots of trees and no forest.
There is only one map in my text, located right after the table of contents. It is amateurish and confusing. This story begs for maps that picture the many detailed accounts of the Canadian actions, but there are none. Thus, this book repeats a common weakness of military accounts -- describing movement over complicated terrain in words only.
On the other hand, the photographs are interesting and valuable.
I do not challenge the other reviewers' reviews, but we clearly were not reading the same book. Had the accounts in the book been placed in the context of other Normandy actions, had the broader operational and strategic picture been painted, had the individual unit actions been organized and grouped to illustrate the major thrusts of the action, I might have enjoyed the book more. To be fair, the overall Canadian action involved straightforward slugging through an endless sucession of German defenses and that is a difficult story to tell. Unfortunately, the author apporached the story by slugging through an endless sucession of sometimes indistinguishable actions and he did not do it well.
I'm sorry to submit this review, but I think that there are other and better ways and books than this one to understand the Canandian contribution to the Normandy breakout.

The Count Dracula of legend is revealed to be based on a 15th century Romanian warlord called Vlad Tepes who favoured fearsome night attacks on the Turks and torturing his captors by driving stakes through their bodies in this grimly fascinating piece of historical detective work. If there is such a beast as a 'Draculanorak', then this is the book they've been waiting for. Among fascinating snippets unearthed are the fact that Christopher Lee wore red contact lenses for those blood-red eyeballs in the Hammer films, and the former dictator Nicolae Ceaucescu once said smugly to his health visitor: "A man like me comes along only once every five hundred years". The author, a crime novelist and historian, wonders: "Was his predecessor, five hundred years earlier, Vlad Dracula, the Impaler?"

About the Author
M.J. Trow is a crime novelist and historian. He teaches history at a school on the Isle of Wight. His novels include the Lestrade series for Macmillan/Constable and the Maxwell series for Hodder. His non-fiction includes Who Killed Kit Marlowe? (Sutton,2000).

This book could use better editing

I am no expert on Dracula but my historical sensibilities have been offended by several serious errors in the text. Here are just two examples: on pages 9-10 Mr. Trow writes:
"...Oliver Cromwell, whose head ... may or may not have been separated from his body..."
It is a well-known fact that Cromwell's head definitely had been separated from his body, and found its lonely grave only in 1960.
On page 123 we find the following fragment about Jan Zizka:
"...he had fought for the Teutonic Order against the Poles...
Losing an eye at Tannenberg in 1410 fighting for Wenceslas..."
These two incomplete sentences contain four mistakes. First, Zizka fought FOR the Poles AGAINST the Teutonic Order. Second, he did so at the battle of Tannenberg in 1410, therefore he couldn't fight there for Wenceslas. Third, the unnamed battle from the first sentence and the battle of Tannenberg/Grunwald are one and the same event. Fourth, Zizka lost an eye in his adolescence.
In short, this book could really benefit from knowledgeable editing.

Vampirism and the Real Dracula

Although the book has several chapters about vampirism and Bram Stoker's Dracula, the remaining chapters about Vlad Tepes are very detailed and a good read. Vlad surely was one of the most cruel tyrants ever and his atrocities are described with much detail. Contemporaries wrote about the "untold abuses, sad murders and mutilations by the cruel tyrant Dracula" and the author discusses the sources and their reliability by their level of interest in blackening Vlad. According to Trow, many of Vlad Dracula's acts can be interpreted as efforts to enforce his own moral code upon his country and to strengthen and modernise the central government at the expense of the nobility, because they had repeatedly undermined the power of the Wallachia's rulers (and buried alive his elder brother).

An interesting section describes the `usual' way of impalement and the most likely way used by Vlad in the case of mass impalements or when a mother was impaled together with her baby.

About the Author
Michael Bennett is Professor of History at the University of Tasmania, Australia. He is the author of Community, Class and Careerism. Cheshire and Lancashire Society in the Age of 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight', The Battle of Bosworth and Lambert Simnel and the Battle of Stoke. He hit the front page of The Times in 1997 with his discovery, during the research for this book, of a formerly unknown charter in which Richard's grandfather, Edward III, sought to bar women from the royal succession.

A Thorough, Thoughtful Assessment of Richard II

Michael Bennett's new book about Richard II is thorough and thoughtful, much like his previous books on the Wars of the Roses. Many previous studies of Richard II have focused on the possibility of his decline into insanity. Bennett's book does not dwell on this at all, rather focuses on his actions and the consequences. The period around 1399 is very convoluted and Bennett sorts it out well. Since most accounts of the abdication/deposition were writtern by Lancastrian sympathizers, it was very interesting to read a well-reasoned, balanced account. (By the way, the Amazon entry for the book is incorrect; it should be Richard II and the Revolution of 1399 - not 1339!)

You might see one such narrative in a book concerning larger scale engagements...but Mr. Forty provides many separate narratives. Worth every penny I paid.

The conclusions about social policy drawn by the authors can be generalized to similar situations in other Western capitalist countries.

Hornblower stories are great stories

I purchased this book for my dad, thanks to him we are all Hornblower fans. A great fictional character that lives during historically exciting times. This is the last of the books and I don't think it is apart of the actual series. But since you never want the action to stop I was glad to buy it.

One footman enjoyed rowing on the lake every morning before work, while others had to sit up late at night sewing their own work-dresses. Contemporary manuals, diaries, accounts and first hand recollections provide a vivid insight into what life was really like for those in domestic service. A wealth of photographs, engravings and panels illustrate the domestic workings of country houses, many now looked after by the National Trust. This is an absorbing book for social historians and visitors to country houses alike.

Well-written & interesting book with a slightly misleading title

While this is generally a very interesting and informative volume, the reader who picks it up based on the title alone may become annoyed. Sambrook notes that because of the size of the subject, she has limited herself to those three categories of servants who were mostly concerned with cleaning the country house and its contents -- the footman, the housemaid, and especially the laundrymaid. The kitchen staff, grooms, valets, and so on, she says, deserve their own studies. Which is fair enough, I suppose -- but I really wish she had seen fit to include this limitation in the book's title, which implies a much broader study. Moreover, well more than half the book is given over to the laundry, its personnel and equipment, and the various technological innovations introduced during the 19th century in the interest of cleaning the country house's clothing and linens. The author seems to have a particular fascination with the box-mangle -- which is not at all the same as a wringer, assumptions in modern novels notwithstanding. This may reflect the fact that Sambrook was curator of Shugborough Hall, Staffordshire, for nearly twenty years, from which she takes many of her examples, and which boasts one of the most complete surviving laundry blocks.

I did enjoy the sections on the footman and the housemaid, however. The footman may have had a longstanding reputation as an arrogant, self-important, ornamental flunkey, but the lengthy quotations and descriptions of work which Sambrook gathers from memoirs and diaries make it clear he had a very diverse collection of responsibilities, both inside and outside the house. In fact, this division of oversight between the steward and the groom only complicated his life. A great deal is also included about the footman's daily routine of cleaning and personal service, with its many variations depending on the size of the establishment in which he was employed. The housemaid -- who was not the same as a parlormaid -- was almost the invisible side of service, but she also regularly performed the greatest amount of work for the most hours in the day. Again, her exhausting daily routine is presented in great detail. It's interesting to note that, contrary to dramas like "Upstairs, Downstairs," in which the whole staff appears to have hung around for decades, there actually was considerable turnover, a new employer every eighteen months being common. That was how an ambitious footman or maid learned his or her trade. There are numerous photos, many of which I've never seen before -- but I haven't studied the country house laundry system in any detail, either. Within its limited focus, this is an excellent piece of work by a knowledgeable author.

An In-depth look into two aspects of service

I found this book to be very informative. It focuses primarily on two aspects of Victorian-age servant life: footmen and the laundry. The section on footmen is particularly useful, because it is very difficult to find any in-depth documentation of footmen's duties, working habits, everyday lives, etc. Ms. Sambrook covers this area very well, using the private diary of a footmen, as well as other expert sources.
Additionally, she goes in-depth into the laundry facilities and procedures used in English country houses during the last century. Once again, its clear that Ms. Sambrook really did her homework when writing this book- she writes with expertise that is hard to find on this fascinating subject. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
