You are bound to like it too.

This is a great book. I am very surprised there are not a lot of enthusiastic 4 and 5 star reviews.
It tells how Buffalo Bill and the wild west show went over seas, particularly to England. If you ever had a basic interest in the Wild West Show, you are bound to like this. I never even realized they left the country, but apparently there was a jubilee celebration for the Queen of England and they went there alright. Some of the more memorable parts are stories about some of the Indian chiefs, and other members of the company. It 'conveys' a sense of the operations of the the show, and gives you a sort of familiarity with the place, almost as if you, like many of the other crowd members were repeat visitors. It has a nice picture section with a lot of pictures. So basically, it probably might not change your life significantly, but for what it is, it is a really good book.

New Magic for the New Organization

Kay Gilley has transformed my ideas about love and fear in the workplace. In "Alchemy of Fear", it became clear to me that in most workplaces, the foundations on which services and attitudes are built are primarily fear-based and serve the corporate structure rather than the human heart. Our programming demands that, as experts and successful companies, we know all the "right" answers and be able to spit them out cleanly and efficiently in order to maintain our status in this culture. The fear of "not knowing" blocks creativity and closes our minds to a diversity of options. Facing this fear and the resulting chaos this unleashes, and transforming them into energy which holds us in "not-knowing", creates opportunity for amazing growth when combined with clear and soulful intent. This book is required reading for all corporate alchemists who want to practice the new magic of success.

Great advice to "drive fear out of the workplace"

Kay Gilley's book is perhaps the best thing you can read if you wish to follow Dr. W. Edwards Deming's admonition to "drive fear out of the workplace." A unique admixture of real world business savvy and mystic wisdom, reading this book is almost like having Lao Tzu as a consultant to your organization. I was especially intrigued with her description of how being in a trance (not living in the present) generates fear, and how the basic task in life is to wake up from the trances that keep us in fear's thrall. In my own work with the Never Fear, Never Quit organization I find that the dominant organizational emotion is fear (though it may be disguised as anger, cynicism, mistrust, etc), and that the prevalent condition faced by many individuals is that of being "stuck," which is a symptom of being in fear's grasp. Gilley's formula for emotional competence and for transforming fear could be invaluable to organizations and individuals everywhere.

Fine survey of the great Revolution

This remarkable survey covers the civil wars, the Commonwealth and the Protectorate. Charles I had provoked the Revolution by trying to rule without parliament, and imposing arbitrary taxation and arbitrary imprisonment.

The revolution in Britain had an international significance. Although Britain was diplomatically isolated, the European powers faced internal and external threat. Across Europe, there were six revolutions in the 1640s, and conflicts within France, Spain and the United Provinces. Even after the end of the Thirty Years' War (1618-48), France continued to fight Spain. These conflicts stopped them from uniting in a holy war of counter-reformation and monarchism against England.

Revolutionary dictatorship gave birth to bourgeois democracy. The revolution achieved the legislative sovereignty of the king-in-parliament and parliament won control of taxation and spending.

Cromwell's campaign in Ireland prevented a joint Scots-Irish effort to put the young Charles Stuart on England's throne. Cromwell's government achieved Union with Scotland as it entered `one free State and Commonwealth with England'. The Restoration destroyed this union, until its rebirth in 1707.

Roots writes of Charles II that (unlike Cromwell), "There is little evidence that he had a concept of an independent English policy designed to further genuine national interests, much less the capacity to realise it."

Roots sums up, "in history there are no full restorations. The revolution had failed, but there were results which no failure, however drastic, could expunge. ... The Great Rebellion and its aftermath marked a turning point in English history."

The book's last words are: "All our history is one of change and these years, which, though in the event they failed to turn the world upside down, evidently put England askew, are among the most dynamic in that whole long revolution."

Deservedly a classic

Roots' book is a marvelously readable account of the uprising of the mid-1600s, with detailed and convincing discussions of political and intellectual trends, and memorable portraits of the major personalities. The book's interpretations have generally held up well over time, although Coward's The Stuart Age (2nd ed) is an excellent, more recent companion.

Excellent hands on book about hoshin

Beyond Strategic Vision is a hands on book describing how youcan practically introduce hoshin planning. It describes the processfrom beginning to end. Prior to buying this book I had another hoshin book "Hoshin Kanri, Policy Deployment for successful TQM" but that one was much more abstract and theoretic. I would recommend a reader interested to learn about hoshin planning to buy Beyond Strategic Vision.

Aligning lean principles with strategic intent

Time after time I have witnessed the application of lean or six sigma methodologies without a clear perception of how the specific initiatives align with the business strategy - often because the business strategy had never be developed to a stage where obvious connections could be made. Hoshin Kanri fills that gap by providing a means of devolving the high-level business strategies to the point where the individual tasks and projects to support them are identifiable - thereby creating the much need link between local initiatives and strategic imperatives.

The book "Beyond strategic vision" provides as good an explanation of the Hoshin Kanri method as any I have read. It explains in clear terms the process that is followed and supports the explanations with examples from the authors' experiences. The book provides of a number of example templates, and explains in detail many of the tools (an entire chapter focuses on the tools) that support the process. The great insight for me was that the tools used would probably be familiar to anybody that has experience with PDCA, Lean, TQM, Six sigma, etc., it is just that they are used in a strategic, rather than in their more typical tactical or operational, context.

This book presents a comprehensive way to create a strategic planning system. It is easy to read and has plenty of examples of Hoshin Kanri. Hoshin planning is one of the most powerful tools that I have ever used.

Jenssen and Chasemore, illustrators extraordinaire, went to the Lucasfilm headquarters and worked with the art department to see how these crafts were created. Most of the impressive, colorful pictures are on double-page spreads, though the center pages fold out to reveal a colossal four-page representation of a droid control ship. Interesting histories and details are set in a text that surrounds the drawings. "Data Files" give additional tidbits such as crew, manufacturer, speed, and armament. The writing is crisp and easy to read; the technological terms and descriptions are simpler to understand than those in Reynolds's Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary (DK, 1998). Anyone interested in the film or in spacecraft will enjoy this excellent guidebook.

Star Wars Episode I cross-sections

[[VIDEOID:mo2L91FR1WV0WI1]]This is the cross-sections of vehicles from episode I. While quite detailed and infomative it is still a book most likely meant for younger people. It is short on the page count at 32 pages but the shear size of the book is impressive at 10 1/2 X 14 inches. The art work is quite impressive and some include the pilot or occupants of the ship which is a nice touch. I recommend it.

The Republic Cruiser Radiant VII.
The Trade Federation Landing ship.
The Trade Federation MTT (multi troop transport).
The Gungan sub.
The royal starship of Queen Amidala.
The podracers (only Teemto's, Anakin's and Sebulba's podracers are cross sectioned).

Worth buying for a fanatical

This book is extremely comprehensive and a very good insight into how the ships 'work'! Perhaps some ships are more labelled for 'what parts on the ship are' more than 'how they work' but this is ok as it is FICTION! If we did know how they worked then we would be building them! The book is worth getting for any Star Wars fanatic and fans of the previous books of this type will enjoy this equally. I have enjoyed it and would recommend it to any of my friends who like Star Wars.
