Iwo Jima was the US Marine Corps's toughest battle. In February 1945, 3 Marine Divisions stormed the island's shores in what was supposed to be a 10-day battle, but they had reckoned without General Tadamichi Kuribayashi, the enemy commander. This history draws upon letters, photographs and drawings by General Kuribayashi and is supported by many other eyewitness accounts and the true story, from Press photographer Joe Rosenthal, of the famous flag-raising on Mount Suribachi. The text is illustrated with over 80 photos and includes maps that show locations of defenses and the progress of the battle, drawings of the principal tanks and aircraft of the campaign.

By 1945, Iwo Jima had become a linchpin of enormous tactical importance. Victory in Europe was all but assured, and the largest navy ever to set sail had chased Japan's Imperial fleet back to its native shores. But Iwo Jima remained a persistent thorn, giving Japan hours of warning for air raids and allowing Japanese fighters to harass B-29 bomber routes. The Americans were forced to take Iwo Jima, and the Japanese command knew it--and even though they couldn't hold the island, they were determined to make the U.S. pay dearly. "[F]orewarned of the American invasion and resigned to dying at their posts, [the Japanese] were determined to take as many Marines with them as possible. 'Do not plan for my return,' wrote the commander of the island, Lt. Gen. Kuribayashi, in one of his last letters to his wife."

Wright gets on the ground, down and dirty, covering both sides of the conflict, interviewing survivors from both sides, excerpting official documents and letters (including Kuribayashi's), digging up previously unpublished photos, and giving intimate tooth-and-nail (and often grisly) accounts of every engagement, from prelanding prep to D day to D+36. Derrick Wright's interest in World War II was stimulated by the many Luftwaffe bombing raids on his native Teesside. Why take Iwo?

Once the Marianas fell, the U.S. wasted no time in building five airbases there in order to send the Superfortresses, the B-29s, over the Japanese home islands to bomb factories and large cities. On Iwo Jima, the Japanese maintained an airbase and a radar system. Situated half way between the Marianas and Japan, Japanese fighters were sent aloft to harass the B-29s both coming and going on their runs. The radar afforded the enemy a two-hour advance warning of the bombing raids. Iwo was taken to put an end to this and to provide a refuge for our damaged bombers on the return run. From now on, our own fighters from Iwo would accompany the big planes on the last leg of their flight.
In this relatively small book, Derrick Wright does not waste a word. In less than 200 pages he tells in great detail of the struggles of the three Marine Divisions which took this island. He also does justice to the strategy and leadership of General Kuribayashi, the commander of the Japanese forces. Taking a lesson from the earlier amphibious assaults, he adopted a defense in depth rather than attempt to defeat the enemy at the beach. Forbidden as well were the useless banzai attacks. Instead he would concentrate on attrition, forcing the Marines to pay heavily for every bit of ground gained. He oversaw the construction of dozens of subsurface blockhouses, bunkers and a labyrinth of underground fortifications, many connected by tunnels. Once again, Howlin Mad Smith comes under criticism, this time for refusing to send in the 3rd Regiment of the 3rd Division when casualties ashore had soared. If the book has a fault, it is the too kind treatment of H. M. Smith. The Marines suffered 5,885 dead and 17,272 wounded. The Navy lost 881 men and another 1,917 wounded. Japanese death toll has been calculated at 21,060. 27 Medals of Honor were awarded at Iwo and Wright tells each story briefly in an appendix.

Another look at bloody Iwo...

Derrick Wright lives in England, and so his way of viewing the Iwo Jima fight has a slightly different tone than the two best books by Americans, Bill Ross's "Legacy of Valor" and James Bradley's "Flags of Our Fathers." I don't feel comfortable saying that I "enjoyed" any of these three books on the battle...the fight was too costly in American lives, and too horrifying, to use the word "enjoy." My former father-in-law was there, and is quoted in Wright's book briefly. This is a worthy effort, and surprisingly, although I read all three of the books I mentioned in the same year, each is different enough from the others so that I did not feel I was reading the same book three times at all. The current price on this book seems a little high to me, however, and I would suggest buying "Legacy" or "Flags" first. In all the Iwo books, the dominant impressions one is left with are of courage, grace under fire, stress, fear, tension, endurance, and the ugliness of violent death on both sides. If you want to begin to understand U.S. Marines, and to value them, start with the books on Iwo Jima. Imagine yourself, at l8 or 20 years old, having to face what these guys faced when hitting the beaches. Don't be surprised if you have nightmares after reading.

Excellent history of the battle for Iwo Jima

I've only recently become interested in reading about WW2 and have been chugging through the books on the battles for the Pacific. My favorite is still With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa as while it doesn't cover the big battle plans of the generals it's account puts the reader right in the trenches, on the beaches gore and all. Yes "With the Old Breed" gave me nightmares for a bit. This book while detailing the battle and the death and distruction somehow does not feel quite as "in your face" or maybe I'm more numb. I did learn a lot about the whole Pacific war strategy from this book, and that makes is easier to read and think about.

This is my first book on the battle for Iwo Jima and as such I found the beginning with the overview of why we fought for this island very informative. The book covers the defensive plans of the Japanese, the offensive plans of the Americans, the disaster that befell both sides, the Japanese were not really prepared for the Marines to keep going in the face of death, as well as the tanks, and Navel shelling. And in fact the book alludes to the Japanese general writing home to say he would hold the island as long as he could but that he knew it was hopeless to think of winning. In fact this battle could be considered in 20/20 hindsight to have motivated the USA to use an Atomic bomb on Japan rather than go through a land war with Iwo Jima levels of casualties. But again, the USA was firebombing Japan at the time and whether or not a protracted war would have been fought on Japanese soil with out using the A-bomb is pure conjecture on my part. For the Marines, they were not really ready for the battle for the last airfield. The land better suited the defenders, and yet it didn't seem reasonable to just let the Japanese hold that ground and wait them out. After all, eventually they would have run out of ammo and food and water.

I recommend this as a another good analysis of the battle.

He served with the UN in Lebanon in 1982-83 and again in 1997, and as an EC Monitor in the former Yugoslavia in 1994-95. He contributes articles on a regular basis to military and political journals in the UK and US.

In the Balkans, your friends may be your toughest foes.

Fighting in the Bihac Pocket of northern Bosnia pitted not only the usual antagonists against one another but also saw one Muslim warlord fight in tandem with Serbs against the regular Muslim army. The result was havoc on a scale remarkable even for the war in Bosnia. Brendan O'Shea was present as a UN military observer and uses his firsthand knowledge and special access to original sources to document the startling and terrible effects of a civil war within a civil war. O'Shea also gives us an insight into the perils of demonizing any group (read the Serbs). Like any corruption of the truth, this behavior allows other, equally reprehensible types to get away with the very same atrocities without condemnation (read the Croats). The book further reminds us that hope can come from the most bizarre quarters, especially in this most bizarre part of the world. In December 1994, at a small cafe in Plains, Georgia, a waitress with a southern drawl interrupted a group at a table. She had a long distance call for one of them, who happend to be a representative of former President Jimmy Carter. The call was from Radovan Karadzic and he was putting an offer for a cease fire on the table (literally). And the cease fire held, at least for a time. Only in the Balkans.

I found Mr.O'shea's book interesting,especially the objective parts of it; interviews,letters and case stories. Several times though the objectiveness faltered and one had to read about the author's personal views and insignificant problems for ECCM personel, compared to what the Bihac people had to live thru. Accounts of how life in Bihac town was, stories from and about local people, and their views on how life in Bosnia might have ended had the US not broken the weapons embargo, were missing.And then perhaps a subjective epilog from the author on how to survive an onslaught by an army, which is supported with men and material from the JNA.

About the Author
Dr Guido Knopp, born in 1948, rose to become editor of the Frankfurter Aligemeir Zeitung and later foreign editor of the Weit am Sonntag. Today he runs the current affairs department of ZDF, Germany's second national TV network. His books for Sutton include 'Hitler's Henchmen' (2000), 'Hitler's Holocaust' (2001), Hitler's Children, (2002), and 'Hitler's Women' (2003).

Pop history damnation of the SS

This is a very general review of the SS that discredits and demeans it at every opportunity.

This generally works except when overbroad generalizations are made about the militarized portion of the SS, the Waffen-SS, which was minuscule until about 1942 but, man for man, is generally considered to have out-performed the regular German army in World War II, the Wehrmacht. The author (or authors, see discussion below) contend that the Waffen-SS was generally no better than the Wehrmacht but provide no evidence to support their contentions, other than broad generalizations, e.g., about numbers of injuries that establish nothing, and a comment that other portions of the German Army advanced slightly farther and faster than the Waffen-SS during the Ardennes offensive. But as one Waffen-SS commander noted even before that offensive: "The twists and turns on the path/roads we are expected to manouever our tanks and armor are so tortuous we would probably travel faster on bicycles." The author(s) go on to repeatedly decry the West's glorification of the Waffen-SS as a premier fighting force because to him (them) the mere fact that these soldiers fought under the tangential auspices of the SS means that no matter what they did or how they performed it does not deserve any praise of any kind for any reason whatsoever.

The book is broken down into six chapters. Each chapter lists two authors, the designated author of the book itself, German popular journalist Guido Knopp, and another person. No information is given on why the other person is listed as a co-author or what was their contribution.

Each chapter is also interspersed with quotations from people who were involved in the matters being discussed. Sometimes this is helpful but, for the most part, the quotations interrupt the flow of the text (and often contradict it). In addition, too many of the same people are quoted too many times, with less effect each time. For example, one Communist opponent of the early Nazis is repeatedly quoted that the Nazis were not good people and killed opponents, such as Communists. Do we need a Communist (who also killed their opponents, such as Nazis) to tell us this? Indeed, the authors quote one Communist as bragging that before the Nazis came to power when the Nazis came marching down his block he and his Communist cohorts, when they could, made sure they trapped the Nazis and they did not leave, i.e., they killed the Nazis.

An exception are quotations from the memoirs of the widow of Reinhard Heydrich (at one point the apparent no. 2 man in the SS), which are by turns perverse, bizzare, or intriguing, depending on your point of view.

The six chapters are on (1) the beginnings of the SS, (2) background on the SS's primary leader, Heinrich Himmler, (3) background on Reinhard Heydrich, Himmler's second in command until Heydrich's assassination in May 1942, (4) a review of the concentration camp system and mass deaths that resulted, (5) the (non)exploits of the Waffen-SS, and (6) a review of post-World War II activities of the SS, mainly escapes and escape routes from Germany by former SS members and/or avoidance of "victor's justice" at the hands of the Allies, former occupied countries and territories, and Israel.

The chapters suffer from overblown generalizations and sheer exaggeration to make a point as well as what appear to be misstatements.

For example, the author(s) claim membership in the SA, the forerunner or precursor of the SS, at its height was over 4 million, yet every account I have read before this numbers the SA at its height at no more than 3 million (and it is often credited at no more than 2 1/2 million). (The author(s) provide no bibliography or footnotes to support any of their claims, althoug occasionally sources are referred to in the text.)

Also, the author(s) claim Himmler did not have an especially strict father, yet a recent review by noted historian Richard Rhodes, in his work "Masters of Death," claims just the opposite, that Himmler's father was extremly strict. (Mr. Rhode's work, by the way, contains a precis' of Himmler's background and Weltanschauung that is superior in every way to the one found in this work by Mr. Knopp.)

After the war there was speculation that Mueller had been "turned" by the Soviets or had become a stooge of the U.S. The problem is that Heinrich Mueller is/was a common name in Germany. E.g., there were two different SS-Generals named Heinrich Mueller. After the war the U.S. made an intensive search for Gestapo Mueller and questioned many individuals named Heinrich Mueller, including at least one who was retained at a U.S. internment camp. But as far as anyone knows the U.S. never found Gestapo Mueller: Under the Nazi War Crimes Disclosure act, the U.S. issued a report in about 2001 concluding, after an extensive review of its records (including those of the CIA and CIC (Counter-Intelligence Corps of the U.S. Army), that what happened to Gestapo Mueller after the war is still unknown with any uncertainty but the U.S. never found him, much less interrogated him or, even worse, interrogated him and released him (he was on a list of top Nazi war criminals), and that he probably died in Berlin in early May 1945.

The book does include 30 pictures. With rare exceptions they are all of good quality, although many appear to have been published elsewhere.

The book appears to have been written for popular consumption. It is written at about a high school level of reading. Serious students of the Second World War, the Third Reich, or the SS are unlikely to obtain anything of value from this book. Anything they do find cannot be substantiated for the reasons discussed above.

The true story of the Waffen-SS

This is an excellent examination of the SS and the Waffen-SS. It shows the true depth of evil that man is capable of.

That the Waffen-SS was engaged in one of the biggest genocides in recent time in beyond doubt. Read this book and you will also have no doubts. This is a good companion to Goldsworthy's Valhalla's Warriors which examines the Waffen-SS on the Eastern front and the crime they committed.Valhalla's Warriors: A History of the Waffen-SS on the Eastern Front 1941-1945

Popular History of the SS

I have mixed feelings about this book. I found the book interesting with a readable style. The book is broken up into subjects. It starts with synthesis of the SS and their rise to power, then a biography of Heinrich Himmler followed by a biography of Reinhard Heydrich and ascendancy of the Gestpo and the murderous Einsatzgruppen. Next the book discusses the Death Head units and the concentration camps. I found it interesting how entangled the SS actually was and movement of SS men between the various arms of the organization (the Reich administration, the concentration camp guards, and the Waffen-SS).

Then the book starts to lose me as it gets into the history of the Waffen SS and post-war Germany and the attempts of Nazis to avoid punishment. In these chapters, the author(s), in addition to just telling the story, attempt to dispel two "myths". First the book attempts to discredit the fighting prowess of the Waffen-SS and second to discredit the claims of the existence of ODESSA (supposedly an international ex-Nazis group that engaged in securing the freedom of ex-Nazis). The author(s) arguments jump around and are not very convincing. As a frequent reader of histories, I was put off by the lack of proper references and the constant jumping around with quotes without giving some creditability of the statements. I think the book just tries too hard to make these points. I can understand another reviewers perception that the book is slanted propaganda.

In the end, I agree with the author(s) point in regard to the Waffen-SS. They often lacked experienced leadership resulting in poor combat tactics (experience in the field resolved this problem when causalities were not excessive) and while the original units were diehard Nazis that were determined and fanatical fighters the later explosion in recruiting efforts watered down this strength. Regardless of whether they were SS or Wehrmacht, in general, the German soldiers were able and determined fighters which is easily inferred by the respect that they gained from their allied opponents. In regard to ODESSA, I imagine it could have actually existed, but I would agree it probably didn't have the impact Simon Wiesenthal proclaimed. Again the author(s) constant assertions that ODESSA did not exist are followed with no real support, just more theories. When the book stated facts and reported actual events it succeeded. I found it interesting the Nazis sympathizer groups that are still active in the attempt of helping free war criminals or rekindle the Nazi ideals. In summary, I can recommend this to novices on the subject, but those who are more familiar with the subject should look elsewhere.
