Understanding the difficulty with meaning

An excellent book. Von Glasersfeld very carefully builds up a conceptual notion of how humans acquire and modify their internal concepts of the world. After a careful summary of some leading historical thought in the area of meaning and constructivism, Prof. von Glasersfeld clearly shows the internal workings of how meaning is built up from experience and how we understand our meanings through continual negotation with the external world.
This is one of the few books that I have seen that actually discusses the idea of "re-presentation", or how one's memories are stored and re-presented when triggered by a stimulus, such as a word. It is definitely enlightening to think about the transfer of meaning in this way and how it informs about the inherent limitations of computer intelligence.

Feroze Ghadially is the grandmaster of ultrastructural pathology both human and nonhuman. He has updated the first edition with pertinent clinical case correlations and provided a very complete overview for the practicing pathologist, pathology resident and fellows. This book will prove to be a must for preparing for the American Board of Pathology examination for pathology residents. The photographs are of exceptional high quality and illustrate each of the pathologic conditions well. Feroze, you did it again.....

Revisionist History - Duke Robert Defended

Katherine Lack seeks to show that Robert Curthose was defrauded of his inheritance twice. First by William Rufus and then by Henry. All in all, I found Lack's book entertaining and an interesting perspective. It makes for a fast read with well written prose. I agree with her main point that Robert Curthose was treated over harshly by the monastic chroniclers. However, I think some of her points must be taken as unsubstantiated.

Lack discards the testimony of monastic chroniclers like Orderic Vitalis in pursuit of her claims. Orderic Vitalis was biased source, but she discredits him completely. I would recommend Frank Barlow's book William Rufus (English Monarchs). Barlow explores the succession and rift leading up to William the Conqueror's death in great detail. He likewise points out the bias and sometimes confusion of Orderic Vitalis and the copying of De obitu Willelmi from the form of previous works on Louis the Pious. But I feel he puts the story in better perspective and provides a more balanced account. Lack also leaves out the account of Robert's first rebellion before Gerberoy. In this episode, Robert tries to capture Rouen after an argument with his father and joins the opposition when he is thwarted. In addition, Lack's belief that Robert was still on good terms with William the Conqueror from 1083-86 seems unlikely. There is no mention of Robert assisting in the suppression of the conflict in Maine in winter 1083-4 or at his sister's wedding to Alan of Brittany in autumn 1086.

Lack rejects the evidence of William the Conqueror's succession of England to William Rufus. Most of her points are reasonable, but she does not provide any evidence that supports her theory that Robert Curthose was chosen to inherit England and Normandy. Why would there not be testimony from Henry or others that William Rufus's inheritance was a fraud. Lack's continued use of Orderic Vitalis and selected rejection of his chronicle without any support are disconcerting.

Lack also follows the conflict between the brothers including Henry. But I would say that the details are provided more completely by Barlow. Lack also discusses the First Crusade and Robert Curthose participation in it. It isn't an incredibly detailed account, but makes for a good read. Robert is shown as an important part of the victorious army and the later critics are disarmed.

Lack writes of Robert's return from the Holy Land and his welcoming at Constantinople and Italy. She discusses Robert's return to Normandy and his discovery of Henry's coronation as King of England. Lack places Henry as orchestrating the assassination of his brother William Rufus. Again her assertions seem reasonable, but are unsupported by actual evidence. I would recommend Frank Barlow's book on William Rufus for a more scholarly review of William Rufus's death. Regardless, Henry does take the kingdom of England for himself which is contrary to established agreements between William Rufus and Robert Curthose.

Lack tells the story of Robert Curthose organizing an invasion of England and with victory close at hand agreeing to peace with Henry. She follows Henry's devious actions as he denuders Robert's allies and later obtains victory at the Battle of Tinchebray. Lack does her best to defend Robert's actions and exposing Henry's unscrupulous behavior. However, it shows that Robert Curthose was not cutout for the rule of the duchy. He was not capable of adapting to the political tactics of Henry. As can be seen with the difficulties of William the Conqueror, William Rufus, and Henry in maintaining the duchy, political skillfulness was a necessity. Lack also writes of the efforts of William Clito to regain his inheritance. This is an interesting continuation of Robert Curthose's story which is well placed.

Great information on a lost part of history

Robert Curthose is almost a forgotten piece of English history. The author has done a fantastic job of filling in the blanks regarding William the Conqueror's eldest son. I really enjoyed reading this book and getting more information regarding this era of history. Perhaps a book about Robert's time with the Crusade is in the works?

I learned a lot about the time of Duke Robert but felt I learned more about his brothers William Rufus and Henry. I didn't get a feeling for what Robert really was about although it was interesting to learn that he had gone on a crusade after Rufus had seized the throne.

This book is an example of race baiting at its worst. Overly abstract and geared at pitting blacks against whites. If you want to read a book that accurately portrays issues of race or class in America, pick up Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, and leave this example of sensationalistic pulp where it belongs: unread on a dusty shelf.

The American 'island-hopping' campaign in the Pacific during the Second World War was a crucial factor in the eventual defeat of Japan in 1945. The assault and capture of these seemingly unimportant islands meant US bombers and their fighter escorts could now reach mainland Japan, eventually crippling Japan's war economy. In November 1943, Tarawa tested the doctrine of seaborne assault to the limit in a 76-hour battle in which Marines waded ashore from the surrounding reefs in the face of murderous enemy fire. Peleliu in September 1944 was the 'unknown battle', where a combination of poor planning, dubious leadership and a major change in Japanese defensive strategy turned what was expected to be a three-day battle into one of the most savage battles of the war. Iwo Jima in February 1945 was a titanic struggle that eclipsed all these battles, as three Marine divisions struggled in appalling conditions against an enemy for whom surrender was not an option. That April a massive Marine/Army operation against Okinawa was a foretaste of what could be expected in the proposed assault on the Japanese mainland. These battles were all characterized by savage fighting and heavy casualties on both sides. Employing archive color and black & white photographs, maps and first-hand accounts, the author relates these pivotal battles to the wider struggle against the Japanese in the Pacific.

The History of the World is now completely updated. Simon Adams has continued the work of Plantagenet Somerset Fry (1946-1996) and has worked on this book with a number of consultants who have helped to make this book truly spectacular.

If you have ever wondered what an Etruscan headband looked like (rather ornate gold leaves), caught yourself fascinated by Polynesian navigation or love thinking about living in a castle, this book has a lot to offer. Here you will find a picture of the Mayflower and then a two-page section on the 1700-1750s world, complete with a timeline. Actually every page has a timeline running along the edge so you can instantly place the information being discussed within context. The main chapters include:

Some of the unique features of this book include color-coded information that is divided into five main regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas and Oceania (Australasia, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands). Date-led entries provide interesting details about significant developments in the world. Artwork and modern pictures help to give a visual reference to the key events pages. There are special feature pages to give a space for descriptions of the culture being discussed and the "illustrated comparative time charts" put the information into perspective in a chronological order.

As you read through the book, you can watch the world change and the pictures give a glimpse into the past, like the partially restored Minoan palace at Knossos. You can learn fun things like facts about the Inca's Freeze-dried potatoes and there is a picture of a potato that is 500 years old that was being preserved in case of a famine. Imagine having to remember how to read information from a string called a quipu instead of writing.

Population density maps give a better idea than numbers, a special section on inventions and discoveries shows progress and a comprehensive index and helpful glossary make this book even more useful. Information about beaded amulets sewn back in the 1800s helps to explain why they are still popular today in bead stores. The history of buildings page shows the endless variety of creative expression. The lacquered and beaded items are especially fascinating in this book.

This book can also be fun to read if you are just wandering around this site. I looked up a Persian fruit bowl and ended up finding some rose scented candles and beautiful china patterns. A search for a Ming Chinese food dish brings up a book about Chinese Medicine. It is very likely something in this book will cause you to search for more information or you will enjoy recognizing scenes from movies or world events.

A Little Too Rudimentary

I love DK's travel books but this DK history book isn't as informative and doesn't have the same quality of insightful illustrations and drawings that those travel books have. The text too is very elementary. If you want a cursive outline, this is quite basic, but if you are wanting to bolster your basic knowledge of history in the form of a survey, look elsewhere.

Senan Molony is the Political Editor of the Irish Daily Mail and the author of a number of historical works, including several books on the RMS Titanic and related ships. He is also author of Lusitania: An Irish Tragedy, and has appeared in many TV and radio maritime documentaries.

It's OK but there is much better, more authoritative, competition

I do not disagree with the review posted of the first reviewer. However , he missed a significant technical error (in my opinion) that was right in front of him in his attachment to his review. Specifically, the picture attributed to John Dempster in his posting appears on the last page (#144) of the book with the caption identifying the ship as the German liner "Bismarck" on its way out of Cuxhaven as WW I war reparations to the White Star Line. allegedly circa 1922 i.e. 10 years after the Titanic sank. This is not the German liner Bismarck which subsequently became the White Star Majestic. Rather, it is clearly the RMS Queen Mary (circa 1936) likely heading down the River Clyde in front of probably cheering Brits on its way to gather its lifeboats and begin its builder's sea trials prior to delivery to the Cunard/White Star Line. This is an error which I attribute to the author; if you don't know have the proper technical background knowledge, don't try to write about it unless you have a technical specialist to proof your work. This is the kind of error that can irreversibly damage your credibility and that of the book. Poor "RMS Queen Mary" ! This is the second time in recent expensive books where I have seen it misidentified .... the other was Richard Silvin's piece on the French liner "Normandie" where he identified the Queen Mary as the "Ile de France, 1927" on page vii early in the book. I rated this book one star above the first reviewer >> because of the pics which I previously had not seen----not for the author's technical prominence. I will keep it for the photographic value.

Titanica for All

I have read dozens of books on the Titanic and seldom find anything new. This book has photographs and stories I haven't seen before. I liked the format and sepia-toned pictures which evoke that era. I would recommend this book for Titanic aficionados and those just beginning to learn about this great, grand tragedy.
