Trio tells the story of three war correspondents, two Englishmen and an Australian, all in their thirties, whose friendship was forged during World War II. They became so close that their colleagues dubbed them "The Trio," sometimes out of disgruntled rivalry. Alan Moorehead, Alexander Clifford, and Christopher Buckley worked for the Express, Mail, and Telegraph respectively. Clifford and Moorehead lived together more closely than most married couples, and all three correspondents spent the war years traveling relentlessly, chasing news, and writing stories, while being reliant on each other’s friendship and mutual trust. They slept under the desert stars, in sumptuous Italian villas, in trains and army trucks. They were frequently in the line of fire, while their names became synonymous with the best war reporting. The Trio describes their relationship, what happened to each of them in the war, and finally, when the fighting was over, how success gave way to personal tragedy.

The perpetual concerns around the teaching and learning of mathematics and its use in work and everyday life, relate to a number of issues:
-- doubts about the transferability of school learning to outside settings
-- declining participation in A-level and higher education mathematics courses
-- under-representation of certain groups, such as females, in mathematics study
-- the aversion of many people to mathematics generally

This book addresses these issues through investigating the following:
-- the ways in which numerate thinking and performance of adults are context-related
-- the inseparability of thinking and emotion, and the consequent ways in which mathematical activity is emotional, and not simply cognitive
-- the understanding of mathematics anxiety in psychological, psychoanalytical and feminist theories
-- social differences in mathematics performance, anxiety and confidence

Drawing on works such as those of Jean Lave and Valerie Walkerdine, and ideas for poststructuralism and psychoanalysis, this volume shows ways of reconceptualising current debates in mathematics education, including its psychological and sociological aspects. It points to ideas for practical applications in education and training, such as clarifying the problems with the transfer of learning, and countering mathematics anxiety. It also illustrates a number of ways of fruitfully combining quantitative and qualitative methodologies in educational research.

About the Author
Jeff Evans is Principal Lecturer in Social Statistics at Middlesex University, and teaches social and business statistics and research methods. A graduate of the Universities of Waterloo(Canada) and London, he has also prepared course materials for the Open University. His research interests include: contexts and 'transfer' of knowledge and learning, especially among adults; mathematical thinking and emotion; the public understanding of mathematics and statistics; and bringing together quantitative and qualitative methodologies in social and educational research. He has given talks and published widely in all these areas, and is co-editor of Demystifying Social Statistics (Pluto, 1979)

Too much Theory, not much repair.

I was hoping for more practical hands on repair in print & pictures. I've found their
are almost no spare parts available for VCRs. No one wants to fix them either.
Ebay has almost a hundred on open bid at any one time. My ebay
purchase turned out as a bad sound problem & money down the drain. The big
demand for VCR's have NTSC(analog)TV tuners built in them which makes the average age
about 1996 & buying one is a crap shoot. You still can get New VCRs via Amazon & that I recommend.
Its better to buy a ATSC(digital) TV tuner stand alone box with a stand alone VCR for best results.

Understocked, overpriced

I've used the book as a reference in neurology a number of times. On each occasion the contents provided a very nice general summary of the more basic information on the topic. Also in each case, critical and well established aspects of the clinical condition --- essential to decisionmaking --- were omitted from the text without even the slightest implied reference. Some of the missing information was "new" (last 4-5 years), much of it was not. A well written general survey of neurology for the medical student, the level of omission of significant or critical information suggests that even the family practitioner should exercise great caution in using it as a decision-making guide. Books that appear less complete, in the end, provide at least equal information and utility. Rated as high as 2* because the text is well written and the minimum of basic information is provided, though not at a level appropriate to a skilled neurologist.

A letdown....

Any large 2 volume reference text certainly looks impressive. But, unfortunately, NICP is only superficially attractive. I have used this as a reference many times and have closed the book without gaining any satisfactory answers. Considering it's size and price, NICP is a huge letdown. The online subscription service is costly, but at least it gets continuously updated and has videos to boot.

if you have "nicp" at home you dont need to look for any articles in any of those (too many) journals published around . you will find all necessary information, including diagnosis, uptodate treatment, research, good studies about any topic you can imagine. This is the best tetbook for the neurologist of any generation.

About the Author
Ruth Vinz is a professor and the Enid and Lester Morse Chair in English Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Before becoming a teacher educator, she taught in secondary schools for more than twenty years.
