Operation MARKET GARDEN, the codename of the Allied operation conceived by Montgomery was launched on 17 September 1944. It was designed to outflank the German defensive line known as the West Wall, by establishing a bridgehead across the lower Rhine River at the Dutch town of Arnhem. It was hoped that this would place the Allied armies at the threshold of the Ruhr and possibly bring the war to an early conclusion.

The Allied Supreme Commander Eisenhower, endorsed Montgomery's strategy on 10 September 1944 and offered him Brereton's First Allied Airborne Army. Later he agreed to divert supplies from other fronts to Montgomery's 21st Army Group, so setting the scene for one of the Allies' most disastrous errors in Northwestern Europe: the failure to clear immediately the approaches to the vital port of Antwerp.

As the codename implied, the operation, commanded tactically by a British Army officer, Lt. General Browning, was divided into two: MARKET, the employment of airborne troops to seize bridges across eight water barriers; and GARDEN, the advance of Horrock's 30th Corps across them. Speed was essential, with Horrocks having to cover in three days the 59 miles to Arnhem from his starting line on the Meuse-Eszaut Canal. To aid the operation, the Dutch government-in-exile called for a railway strike. This brought German military supplies to a halt but also led to German reprisals that caused a terrible famine that winter.

In ARNHEM: NINE DAYS OF BATTLE, author Chris Brown tells in extraordinary detail the story of the 1st British Airborne Division and the 1st Independent Polish Brigade and their near annihilation at the hands of the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions. At the end of nine days of heavy and fierce fighting, nearly 4 out of 5 men of both the British and Polish units would be killed, wounded, or captured. Brown makes excellent use of eyewitness accounts and unit diaries as well as utilizing the most recent scholarship that brings the human side of this campaign to the reader. This isn't just another re-hashed account of Operation MARKET GARDEN but one that emphasizes the British and Polish contribution to this important campaign. The photographs are very good and helpful in the reader's understanding of this battle but the author could have included more maps which I see as the only drawback to this book. There is one thing that I have to take issue with the author. It is found on Page 62 where he writes that Hitler declared that "the day of the parachute soldier is over" after hearing of the high cost of the major airborne operation to capture Crete. But that is wrong. The truth can be found in THE 1ST FALLSCHIRMJAGER DIVISION IN WORLD WAR II: YEARS OF ATTACK where in June, 1941, Hitler gave the order to bring the Fallschirmjager division up to strength as well as ordering the formation of two additional Fallschirmjager regiments , the 4th and 5th. By the end of the war, there would be no less then eleven Fallschirmjager divisions! Further, in February, 1942, Hitler accepted Kesserling's proposal to capture Malta by air in Operation HERKULES. Also, the Folgore or Italian paratroopers, were a divisional-sized unit that was formed on Hitler's orders. Churchill himself called for the expansion of British airborne forces after the Battle of Crete.
