William III and Mary II are the only joint reigning sovereigns in English history. William, one of the leading Protestant champions of Europe, and Mary, his young cousin and wife, reigned jointly for only five years. In 1694 Mary died from smallpox and William ruled alone for another eight years. Although short, their reign was notable for the inauguration of the Declaration of Rights and triennial elections, both of which limited the sovereign's power and reaffirmed parliament's. In warfare, however, it was another matter: although William was the first monarch who was not granted an independent income, he was also one of the last to lead his armies in person. He involved England decisively in European affairs and created a new balance of power on the continent. During William's absences at war, Mary was regent. Although she had wept when first told, aged fifteen, that she was to marry her unprepossessing and charmless cousin, they developed a close and loving relationship. Popular with the nation, a connoisseur of architecture, music and gardens, she encouraged the work of Henry Purcell and persuaded William to buy Kensington House, which was rebuilt by Wren and later became one of the major royal residences.
This new biography not only recounts William and Mary's lives and reign but also explores their political influence, the troubled relationships with Mary's father, with her sister - and husband's successor - Anne, and with Charles II's illegitimate son, the Duke of Monmouth who mounted an unsuccessful challenge to the throne. John Van der Kiste has written nearly 20 books on British and European royalty. His most recent biography, with Coryne Hall, is Xenia: Sister of Nicholas II (June 2002)His other works include Kaiser Wilhelm: Germany's Last Emperor and Georgian Princesses. He also writes historical articles and reviews for local and national journals, and contributed to the New Dictionary of National Biography.

Great Read, Interesting Biogaphy

William and Mary is a fascinating look into two of the most unique of British monarchs. The only joint sovereigns in British history, William and Mary reigned togther from 1689 to 1693, when Mary died and William ruled alone until 1702. Van de Kiste's clear writing style and interesting anecdotes make the history come alive, and a series of carefully selected plates enliven the text. Overall a very good read into what most historians simply gloss over- the feelings and aspects of daily life of the period.

Up-to-date and well-written history

This is the most recent biography of William and Mary and the author, John Van der Kiste, uses the most up-to-date research. The book is well done. It is not only historically precise but highly readable with all historical allusions to people and events explained clearly. The alternation between the lives of these two people, a challenge for a biographer, flows smoothly. While the invasion of William has been called the "Glorious Revolution" since 1689, it was frequently not so very glorious to either William III or Mary II. Van der Kiste does a fine job of showing the many personal and political difficulties that they went through. Mary had a terrible conflict throughout her life between loyalty to her husband and to her father, the exiled James II. She was often lonely and a rift developed with her sister Anne that never healed. She always chose her husband over her father but her letters show a deep personal struggle. Her intelligence and graciousness were central to making the revolution ultimately acceptable to the English people. William was greeted joyously by the people but, as so often happened, the honeymoon with Parliament and popular opinion did not last long. Throughout his reign William consistently gave in to Parliament's demands. One reason was an understanding that was there from the beginning of his reign; another was that many of his interests (and deep personal roots and loves) were in the United Provinces and his beloved Orange and he had an abiding desire to protect his homeland from Louis XIV; and, in the last third of his reign, a third reason was just weariness of mind and health. For all the reasons Van der Kiste so well explains, the result was a different kind of England after William than before. The reign of William and Mary is the beginning of true Parliamentary leadership in England and the book is excellent in tracing that development through the lives of these two rulers. Both in England and America, events during the reign of William and Mary lie at the heart of our political processes .
This is an important book about a critical period in English history. The author does a fluent and historically accurate job of explaining both the personal and political issues at stake. It is a book that does both William and Mary justice.

Useful Summary of a Pair of Neglected Monarchs

My title comes from the blurb on the cover of this joint biography of William III and Mary II. It's basically accurate although I would recommend William & Mary by Tony Claydon and W. A. Speck as a better summary. Part of my problem with this joint biography is that not only had I previously read the 150 page joint biography by Claydon and Speck, I'd also read the 483 page joint biography by the van der Zees and biographies of William by Baxter, Robb, Troost and Claydon. Not surprisingly I didn't discover any new insights from Van der Kiste's joint biography. In addition, I was irritated by how little attention he paid to the Disaster Year of 1672 and its impact on William, which was enormous. Not only did it catapult the Prince of Orange into political power in the role of stadholder, which the Party of True Liberty had abolished only a few years earlier, it was responsible for William becoming what Winston Churchill described as a being "created for resisting the domination of France and the Great King." The desire to prevent another Disaster Year is what primarily motivated William to invade England in 1688. As he told the States-General in 1691, he accepted the English crown "that he might be the better enabled more powerfully to assist his Allies, and more particularly this State, against the enterprise of France." Van der Kiste devotes only a few pages to this seminal event, and then spends almost as many pages going back and forth on William's sexual preference only to conclude "that even his closest friends were not sure of the truth." He could have spent one paragraph stating that there is no clear evidence as to whether William was heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual and then discussed how the rumors about his alleged homosexual affair with Arnold Joost van Keppel affected his reputation.
The concluding paragraph of this joint biography is what I like best: "Perhaps the final word should go to G. M. Trevelyan, who observed that unlike his wife the King `never sought the love of contemporaries or of posterity, and he has not obtained it; but he sought their welfare and freedom, and these he achieved.' . . . Industrious, wise and courageous, he was much more capable than his predecessors, was by far the most able monarch of the house of Stuart and was considerably underestimated as a sovereign. The achievements of his self-effacing yet intelligent and cultured Queen should likewise be duly recognized, and all credit accorded her for the influence she brought to bear on his character and the way in which he discharged his duties as King of England."
