Diverse Analysis of Professional Development
By KKeiser
Michael Fullan and Andy Hargreaves have gathered a dozen research-based, insightful articles which focus on the facets of changing schools--and the teachers within them. It is a great complement to the books by Robert Evans and Peter Senge.
"Imposed Change and Experienced Teacher" by Patricia J. Sikes is especially noteworthy for staff developers. It warns of the pitfalls in using authority to impose change, and reminds decision-makers of the importance of giving teachers responsibility and participation in the management of their schools.
Collegiality is discussed by Peter Grimmett and E. Patricia Crehan. Collegiality is discussed as interdependent, contrived, administratively imposed, or organizationally imposed. As viewed within the context of school culture, the authors pinpoint why many well-intentioned movements to provide collegiality for teachers fail.
Principals may wish to turn to "Teacher Performance Appraisal and Staff Development" and "The Principal's Role in Teacher Development." The strength of these articles is the capability they provide to clinically sort out the factors which may make teacher development effective. Other articles focus on novice teachers and on educational policy and the complications they add to professional development.
My interest in this book comes from my reading about Professional Development Schools and other types of university partnerships with schools. Chapter 11, "Beyond School District-University Partnerships," by Nancy Watson and Michael Fullan was quite helpful. Not only do the authors explain the nature and research behind these partnerships, they also report the issues and dilemmas facing new partnerships. These issues include coordination, centraliztion/decentralization, culture of university vs. P-12 schools, and overload and focus. The practical view of their experience is very beneficial.
Although several of the authors use British or Canadian anecdotes and examples, educators in the United States will find striking similarities to the nature of change in American schools.
Few educators may wish to read this book in its entirity, but most educators facing change will find at least one article that elaborates on their interests.
