The author of this study tells Alice's story against the backdrop of tempestuous world events, a racy royal court and an age of aristocratic adultery and mindless pleasure-seeking. The result is a portrait of a woman who loved, and was loved by, the king. At the same time that he met Alice Keppel, the Prince of Wales embarked on another close friendship, this time with Agnes Keyser, the daughter of a prominent member of the Stock Exchange. A financially independent and unconventional woman, Agnes defied social expectations by not marrying, and instead becoming involved in hospital charity work as a founder, with her sister, of the King Edward VII Hospital for Officers, first opened at her London home near Hyde Park. The relationship between Agnes and the King, enjoyed in parallel with Edward's affair with Alice Keppel, was much less in the public eye and less demonstrative, but their loving companionship, mutual support and intellectual exchange was just as important. For 12 years, she provided the King with an affection that often supplanted that of Alice Keppel, and was accepted by the royal family in a way that Alice was not. This volume examines the lives of the two women, their love for the monarch and the role they played in the declining years of one of the most active royal courts in Europe. So So biography

This is a good biographical overview of Mrs. Keppel. I found the information in the book about Agnes Keyser to be skimpy and somewhat lacking in clarity. The info on Mrs. Keyser is placed in this book almost as an afterthought, to give the book a new angle. If you are looking for general information on Edward and Mrs. Keppel this is the book for you. If you want an in depth biography, use another source. An ok read if you want to kill a couple of afternoons.

A fascinating book

A well-written book full of interesting information. The only problem with the book is that Agnes Keyser seems to be more of an afterthought to Alice Keppel than a subject in her own right. The treatment of Mrs. Keppel is wonderfully detailed. I highly recommend this book!

Too much boring detail

Edward VII was a womanizer. He became, in fact, the man his mother Queen Victoria, dreaded he'd become- a caricature of herself and a throwback to her over-sexed Hanoverian uncles. As a child Edward was much less precocious than his sister Vicky, the Princess Royal. In order to make him buckle down to his studies, he was shackled figuratively to the schoolroom from morning to early evening. The Prince Consort and Victoria never appreciated Edward's kindly, warm personality and they tried to force him into being a scholar. As he grew up and had his first sexual experience, his horrified parents believed a safety valve in the way of a wife was needed to make Edward toe the line.
Princess Alexandra of Denmark, whom Edward married under duress, was beautiful but unfortunately congenitally quite deaf and she was woefully uneducated. She was not intelligent and was furthermore, according to author Lamont-Brown, frigid. She formed rather sticky sweet attachments to her six children, but Edward was bored with her and soon began to look elsewhere. For the rest of his life he was an aggressive philanderer.
Two of his last mistresses, Alice Keppel and Agnes Keyser, although very different from one another in personality actually helped the bad tempered, irascible monarch to keep his temper under control and contented enough to perform his kingly duties with equanimity.
Alice Keppel's career was the furtherance of herself, a flamboyant member of upper-class circles, enjoying the aristocracy's mindless pursuit of pleasure and virtually universal philandering. A husband who is cuckolded by royalty is actually flattered that his wife is so adored and she has scaled Mount Olympus in spite of her adultery.
Agnes Keyser, on the other hand, didn't give a fig about society or convention and even elected not to marry in an era when becoming an old maid was the worst thing that could happen to any debutante. The daughter of a wealthy banker, Agnes had money and money in Edwardian England talked even louder than usual. Agnes founded the King Edward VII Hospital for officers.
One gets a sort of vision of these two ladies as a special pet on either side of the King, Agnes perhaps a sedate greyhound and Alice a comfortable purring Persian cat. Mrs. Keppel was easily recognized on the street and if she wasn't blatantly walking arm and arm with Edward, "People would yell "Where's Alice?"And of course, although it is not mentioned in the book, it's rumored that Camilla Parker-Bowls, the great granddaughter of Alice Keppel, propositioned Prince Charles.
There are many juicy tidbits in "Last Loves" but the narrative is often slowed to practically a halt by the large number of obscure relatives, acquaintances, and friends included, with dates. I found myself skipping the remarks about uninteresting people looking for interesting passages. On the other hand, it would have been nice to learn more about Edward's rather unstable nephew, Kaiser Wilhelm II. Alice was plunked next to him at a State dinner and I'd have loved to know what they talked about.
One scene that plays out very differently than reported in most biographies of Edward is the confrontation of Alice and Queen Alexandra at Edward's death bed. Alice invents a scenario in which not only did Queen Alexandra summon Alice to the dying King, she was asked by the King to kiss Alice. The Queen obliges, Edward sinks into a coma, and Alice escorts the sobbing Queen out of the room, Alexandra promising Edward's mistress that the royal family would always take care of her. A witness to this touching scene remarked that what Alexandra really said was "Get that woman away".
The chapters after the death of King Edward follow the remaining lives of Alice and Agnes, but with the King gone, so did my interest flag. On the last page, however, the author sums up nicely the roles of the two mistresses: "no other woman could turn the often bored, aggressive, immature, impatient, selfish and rude monarch into the affectionate,genial, tolerant and witty sovereign his people came to love and respect." When you look at it, that's quite an accomplishment.
