The Dublin King: The True Story of Edward Earl of Warwick, Lambert Simnel and the 'Princes in the Tower', by John Ashdown-Hill

Was Lambert Simnel an impostor or a Yorkist prince? And can DNA evidence offer a clue to his legitimacy and finally solve this 500-year-old mystery?  A year after Richard III’s death, a boy claiming to be a Yorkist prince appeared as if from nowhere. He said he was Richard III’s heir and the rightful King of England. In 1487, in a unique ceremony, this boy was crowned in Dublin Cathedral, despite the Tudor government insisting that his real name was Lambert Simnel and that he was a mere pretender to the throne. Now, in The Dublin King, author and historian John Ashdown-Hill questions that official view. Using new discoveries, little-known evidence and insight, he seeks the truth behind the 500-year-old story of the boy-king crowned in Dublin. He also presents a link between Lambert Simnel’s story and that of George, Duke of Clarence, the brother of Richard III. On the way, the book sheds new light on the fate of the Princes in the Tower, before raising the possibility of using DNA to clarify the identity of key characters in the story and their relationships.

I really enjoyed the extensive research put into this book
By BecsJ
I really enjoyed the extensive research put into this book, the author clearly has a theory that he is putting forward but I do think he has sufficient evidence to make a good case. I felt that the book jumped around quite a bit and could be confusing at times, especially if you are not already somewhat familiar with the historical figures being discussed. Also grated on me that the author would constantly say things like "more on this later" or "i'll discuss this in a bit." I think these phrases which were liberally used added to the feeling of jumping around and harder to create the cohesive narrative of historical framework to bring his theories home with a punch. To his credit, there is so much information to dissect and so many layers of events occurring simultaneously, it would be a difficult task for anyone to tackle. I felt he did a good job and it was an original and well supported point of view. I found it very interesting.

Interesting, thought provoking research with a slight tendency for self reference
By Isabella
Henry Tudor married Elizabeth of York, thus uniting the feuding houses of Lancaster and York, and they lived happily ever after.

Simply not so. Mr Ashdown-Hill explores the very first years of Henry VII's turbulent reign focusing his research on the boy that was crowned Edward VI in Dublin and became the figurehead of the Yorkist rebellion against the new regime that ended with the battle of Stoke and the certain death of at least one Yorkist prince: John De La Pole.

While the reader may not always agree with the conclusions the author derives from his research in the archives, noone can object that, like in the case of Eleanor Butler and Richard III's mitocondrial dna line, research has indeed been done and interesting, thought provoking, little known or newly retrieved documents are presented.

I only wish the author had resisted the temptation to become self referenced and given straightforward citations of all his primary sources in the reference section instead of hinting back at his previous books where he first cited them, which I found annoying even if I do have his previous books, I can imagine how frustrating it can be for any reader who does not. A star was lost in this respect.

not his best book
By Penbardmuse
I was not impressed with this book. The author is making a point but what is it? It is full of suppositions and jumps all over the place. Given at how many books he is churning out, is he doing it because a., he knows his subject matter, b, he needs the money. Either way, not his best book
