One of the better "history lite" efforts I've seen
By Michael K. Smith
While the author is a journalist rather than a historian in the academic sense, she has become indentified with investigations of royal matters and has produced a number of books, articles, and television documentaries in that area. Here she traces in a very readable manner the origins and development of monarchy as a political and social institution from the ancient world to the modern age, and its prospects in the new century. She puts the idea of "divine right" at the root of things, though a number of political philosophers, I think, would say the royal role of Guardian preceded that of priest. Of course, the insistence of Louis XIV that, being the absolute appointee of God, he could do as he pleased, paved the way for the French Revolution. In Britain -- where the book not unnaturally concentrates, though she covers the rest of Western Europe as well -- the rejection of Stewart absolutism led to a short-lived republic, quickly replaced by a thoroughly revamped constitutional monarchy, which became the model for all the surviving European monarchies. And now European royals are having to learn to live in the Age of Celebrity. The author's background shows in the many anecdotes strewn through the narrative but she also engages in fair amount of thoughtful analysis. She also includes a number of insights I haven't seen before, such as pointing out the resemblance of the ceremonial details surrounding a king dining in state to a priest celebrating the mass. She also notes that Henry VIII had a thorough understanding of the utility of pomp and public show, spending more than twice as much on a single tournament at Westminster as he spent on his largest warship.
