A Wretched excuse for a "Biography"
By Theodore Kobernick
This review is complementary to the excellent review by Christina de Souza Leao.
My interest in Pitt the Elder was awakened by Francis Parkman: in "Montcalm and Wolfe" Parkman devotes an entire chapter to Pitt the Elder. In two other books I found Parkman's view confirmed: Pitt the Elder was a GREAT statesman who was responsible for the development of British sea power which enabled a small island to gain the greatest empire in the world.
But Black's "biography" is aimed at tearing Pitt to pieces. The first instance is in the first two paragraphs of the Preface. "Pitt was also castigated by contemporaries and later historians as an arrant hypocrite, a man without balance, principle or moderation . . . a politician without honor." Black continues, "the arrogance, egotism and overweening ambition that contemporaries denounced have been subsequently portrayed as facets of psychiatric illnesses, notably manic-depression. Pitt's imperiousness and extravagant behavior and language were unbalanced." Black's character assassination goes further: with no evidence at all, Black insinuates that Pitt had contracted STD -- "If Pitt did suffer from venereal disease that may have played a role in his late marriage." Astounding! Black founds his insinuation on two items: "The casual sexual opportunities open to young officers in garrison towns . . ."; and a letter Pitt wrote to his sister in which he denounced the destructive "immoralities, or vicious courses" he saw in his fellow officers. But wait! Black cites Thomas Gage as a self-confirmed sufferer of "a most generous clap." How this relates to Pitt the Elder, no one knows.
Black casts aspersions on almost all of Pitt's political and administrative actions. Black doesn't seem to find anything good about the politician who served as first minister to a king who hated him, but nevertheless approved him.
I thought it was crazy to write a biography of a great person, long deceased, with the object of tearing him down. But then I reviewed the Preface and saw the reason: "Much of my work has been on Walpole. Pitt made his name by opposing the great minister." Perhaps Black sought to tear down the great Pitt the Elder in order to vindicate Black's view of Walpole.
As a history, Black's book is loaded with facts and opinions, but lacks a central focus. If the book is a biography, the historical events presented should all be related to Pitt. But they are not; nor are they presented in chronogical order. It's very much a mish-mash, of facts, opinions and abuse.
For me, the single redeeming virtue of Black's history is that it detailed very specifically the rottenness of the political system -- the system in which Pitt throve, and which he had to overcome to effect his great naval and military aims.

For scholars only ...
By Christina de Souza Leão
Anyone interested in rigorously researched late XVIII century English politics will probably enjoy (and learn) from Mr. Black's book. His work about William Pitt, after just a brief, usual part of a chapter on his parents, grandparents etc., dips immediately into maneuvers, conter maneuvers and consequences of ever shifting moods within the parliament.
Unfortunately the reader is presumed to know everything about the Seven Year War, the beginnings of America's revolution etc., as well as about England's major political parties and politicians at that time. The reader is supposed to be looking just for how Mr. Pitt and his opponents politicians handled these issues. So quite important historical events pass by as faint backgrounds.
Although this is somewhat intended to be a biography of William Pitt, and not the history of England in the 1700's, one would look for such a towering individual as a wonderful way to see big world events through England's government eyes. Instead we get a vey narrow perspective of these events. Probably that is the way most politicians see things nowadays ...

Pitt I hardly knew ye
By Publius Fidesiuscultus
This is a heavy academic history with many sources used and heavy in the details. It feels more like a phd thesis than a book easily readable. A non academic would find themselves lost after reading this.
